| BFI Chaplin was undoubtedly one of the greatest performers in the history of the cinema, described by film-maker Mack Sennett as, 'The greatest artist who ever lived' while George Bernard Shaw called him, 'The only genius developed in motion pictures.' This absorbing short compilation concentrates on the great comedian in his formative years and allows us to watch him discover his characterization and develop his unique style in his mid-twenties through such favourite movies as The Tramp (1915), The Vagabond (1916), The Pawnshop (1916), Easy Street (1917), The Rink (1917), The Immigrant (1917), and The Gold Rush (1925), excerpts from which are included with less familiar movies such as A Night in the Show (1915) and Caught in a Cabaret (1914) which he co-directed with Mabel Normand. Quickie: Unmissable compilation of scenes from early films starring Charles Chaplin in his mid-twenties, demonstrating his unique comic style and timing being developed and refined. | |
