| BFI An absorbing documentary that sets out to recreate the physical and imaginative world of the North American Indians and, in particular the central element of their traditional life, their attitude to nature. The film impressively combines specially shot footage filmed in the American North West with the extraordinary still photographs taken by Edward Curtis, whose work forms some 50% of the finished film. Edward S Curtis began his massive project of recording in still photographs with explanatory text all the available information about the Indians of North America in 1896, estimating that his task would take some ten years. By 1905, however, the task was still not completed and, his own financial resources depleted, Curtis succeeded in enlisting the patronage and financial support of J. Pierpoint Morgan and, in 1906, he was able to resume work, finally completing what became one of the most ambitious undertakings ever executed by a single man in 1930. He made over 40 more negatives, most of which were on glass plates and these photographs, which are widely regarded as one of the major achievements in photography, ran to twenty volumes of text and accompanying illustrations. Cross's skill in combining these photographs with shots of the North American landscapes in which the Indians lived, makes for fascinating viewing and the film, which was well received at the London Film Festival in 1980 received the Diploma of Merit at the Chicago International Film Festival in the same year. Quickie: Award-winning documentary on the attitudes of the North American Indians to the natural world, fascinatingly intercutting footage shot for the film with the unique photographs of Edward S Curtis. | |
