21.05 | England, My England | |||
John Osborne's last screenplay, England, My England, co-written with Charles Wood, is a musical drama directed by Tony Palmer, about the life and times of Henry Purcell, England's greatest composer. It is being broadcast to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Purcell's death and stars MICHAEL BALL as Henry Purccll, with SIMON CALLOW as Charles (both a 20th century actor and Restoration King). LUCY SPEED as Ncll Gwyn, LETITIA DEAN as Barbara, ROBERT STEPHENS (in his final screen pcrformancc) as John Dryden and JOHN SHRAPNEL as Samuel Pepys. Using Purccll's music throughout, the film moves back and forth between the late 17th century and the 20th century. A magnificent rcndition of Purccll's music is provided by the MONTEVERDI CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA, conducted by JOHN ELIOT GARDINER. Bored by performing in a Restoration play revival at the Royal Court Theatre, Charles sets out to attempt to discover thc truth about Henry Purcell by writing his own play about the time of the Great Fire of London, Nell Gwyn, Wren, Dryden and, of course, Purccll. In writing his play, Charles becomes both the Charles II of history as well as Charles thc actor writing the play. The optimism and permissiveness of the 1960s are rcflected in the 1660s, with the wildness and excitement which accompanied the restoration of the monarchy - parallels which afford ample opportunity to deliver a withering commentary on the world today.
