the team at the recording this evening was a very strong one - Paul Merton, Sheila Hancock, Graham Norton and Robin Ince.

I was lucky enough to be there for the recording. The episodes will become classics.

I've only been to a recording once before. Queued for ages and was 12th to have my ticket validated, but should have then started the queue by the exit to the theatre. I did not and despite my long wait got a poor seat at the back.

This time the system has changed. You go in through security who scan your bag for sharps, then wait in a reception area. Near the entrance to the reception area is a desk, and that is where you need to stand, for the staff turn up and start validating tickets at that point, irrespective of who got through the doors first. They call in the production guests to go into the theatre, then mobility challenged folk and their friends, then numbers 1 to 50, numbered stickers being given out in order they are validated.

Being in the first 50 and having stood at the doorways between reception and the theatre for some time I was at the head of the queue of ordinary folk and bagged my front row dead centre seat.

It was great to see the eye contact between Paul and Sheila.

At then end Nicholas hangs around waiting to meet "his people" but I managed to say thank you to him as I was walking past the front of the stage to leave, and I am happy to say he said thank you back. I was told on my last visit not to approach the stage to try to speak with him, so I am glad this worked. My thank you was for decades of mirth.

I still play JAM on my ipod every night in my sleep.

Dave

Great post.  Jealous you made it to the front.  I've only ever been at the back / halfway back.
My little boy was on the interview list for the Junior episodes this year, but didn't make it past the interview. :(
We'd have been backstage! ;)

As for the evening ... yes ... you and me both ... mp3 player by the bed with speakers.  Best Way. :D

thanks very much Dave, that was very interesting.

I've started listening to the new compilation and the first two CDs are the Sheila Hancock ones. Three of the shows pit her against the formidable team of William, Nimmo and Jones, but she stands up to them all so well. She's just as funny as Williams and Jones really - well almost...

Actually that's a quartet that works together really well... they all have chemistry and in one of the shows Sheila mentions she worked closley with each of them (outside JAM). Maybe a candidate for the best team ever?

I agree with your appraisal of that panel, Dean.

Sheila has been doing JAM since show two and it is just amazing that her and Nic have lasted so long. She was a virtual regular in the early days although I only heard Nic call her a regular once, then shifted to her as a guest. "A guest! A guest! She's been on this show time in and time out. They shouldn't have women on this show".

I have no conception of having listened to the earliest shows as a child, However my dad always came home for tea in time for the six o'clock news and the comedy (usually a comedy) that followed. So I would have sat through it eating my tea. My earliest recollections of listening are the voices of Kenneth, Derek, Clement and Sheilla, and Alfred Marks as well. I don't think Peter's voice was as strong to make an impact on my young mind.

Dave
