okay I have been quiet for a while but have been saving up lots of lovely
news for you all.
Firstly, we have some dates for recordings – one is later today, Tues
December 2nd, and the other is the 18th. I’m assuming there will be four
recordings/eight shows as usual in the next season, so the others will probably
be recorded in January, and the season will get under way in February.
Secondly, very exciting – a new JAM Classic Collection has been published.
I know many of you will already have all the shows – but can I implore you to
buy this if you can. The more that are bought, the more that get released,
hopefully.
You’ll remember the first Classic Collection had 11 CDs with 22 shows. Two
CDs each were themed around the five regulars and there was a bonus CD.
This one is also themed around five players – Sheila Hancock, Graham
Norton, Gyles Brandreth, Jenny Eclair and Stephen Fry – and as with the first
there is a really nice cartoon of the five with Nicholas. The bonus CD has a
Christmas theme. There are also potted bios of all five.
The shows all feature Nicholas Parsons of course – also featured are
Clement Freud (13 shows), Peter Jones (eight shows), Derek Nimmo (seven shows),
Kenneth Williams (six shows), Paul Merton (six shows), Jenny Eclair (six shows),
Sheila Hancock (five shows), Stephen Fry (five shows), Tony Hawks (four shows),
Graham Norton (four shows), Gyles Brandreth (four shows), Linda Smith (four
shows), Kit Hesketh-Harvey (three shows), Julian Clary (two shows), Ross Noble

The packaging is very nice but does include one error – Graham Norton is

I was also going to mention the recent BBC series, Frequency of Laughter on

named!
Do you have a list of the episode numbers included in the new set, Dean?
Without question, I'm going to buy it - but of course, I plan to rip the disks for my personal use and merge the episodes into my collection. :)

How was it again, are any of these shows introduced by Nick (and/or
Paul)? Aren't the "classic" releases usually introduced? And are there
other audio content that makes them differ from the broadcasts we got?
And finally, do any of these shows happen to be of recordings we only
got a poor recording from already?
I'll buy it regardless, but it's nice to know what to expect.

sorry, just on your last question, I haven't listened to all the shows yet, but even when I have, I doubt I wil find time to go back and compare all 22 shows with previous versions. I know that the issue of audio quality is really important to many of you, so if anyone is doing that, perhaps they could share the results with the group as I know there will be others apart from Espen who will be interested.
I guess we can expect these shows to have been remastered for commercial release though. Many of the shows we have were recorded off radio onto cassette and then copied on to another cassette and so on and then transferred to digital etc etc so we should expect these shows to be better quality.
Once you post the actual episode numbers, I'll work my way through them and compare them to what's in my collection. I just ordered the set (along with Nicholas's book).
As with those World Service comparisons, I can't guarantee that it will be fast, but I'll get it done.

The poor sounding shows are a pain to discover each time I hear them
"aired" on The JAMmer stream. I've been able to replace quite a few in
the past with proper sounding shows, from these CDs, here's hoping we
can get a few more down.
Bt a shame with no introductions! It's stuff like that who makes these
releases valuable for the diehard fans, imo. Even though Nic's banter
more often than not can be quite uninteresting from an informational
perspective, it's *something*.

When I heard you had made a longer version of 239 I had to check mine - I found it to be very poor quality and only 28.03 minutes long. I have now obtained a copy which is 32.09 long and much better quality - I guess this is your re-modelled version? Myself, I find this kind of audio editing unbearably tedious so many thanks to you for all your hard work - you have done a cracking job!

But this is one of two very interesting eps where as you say there seems to be more than half an hour of material and various versions are around that have been edited to take different bits out to make it fit timewise.I guess material has been taken from the other show with this panel and inserted, but we are never going to know for sure.

The version that Golux is referring to is the one I made for this list, a while back. I took the original UK broadcast, and the Transcription Service version and edited all the material together. Each version contains rounds missing from the other.
To get the correct order of the rounds, I used none other than your site. :)

Just going back through my notes, the other episode with more than a half hour of material is #207, Polo. I also produced an extended edit of this one, at the time. It's still on my site if anyone wants it. It looks like I did these in January of 2013.
On a personal note: I'll likely be slower than usual to respond to things for the next couple of weeks. My sick mother received some bad medical news yesterday, so I'm flying back to the UK on Tuesday.

Thanks a lot Dean but I am merely providing the server, the content is indeed the result of this groups joint effort, both in regards to making recordings available and providing metadata. You know who you are.
I'm a regular listener too! Every single night it's either The Jam stream or, if I'm too tired to focus, an ambient stream. But usually JAMmer of course.
Funny little tidbit: If any of you hear a show streamed that is abruptly skipping to the next, especially if it's a pre-Merton show in mediocre quality, well then you hereby know you can probably blame me.
I got an app on my phone to control the server from wherever in the world I am located, and I just can't stand awful sounding recordings, especially if they feature mr Williams on top of that.
So... Sorry, Williams fans. At least the shows are kept in the loop. :)

Just going back through my notes, the other episode with more than a half hour of material is #207, Polo. I also produced an extended edit of this one, at the time. It's still on my site if anyone wants it. It looks like I did these in January of 2013.
On a personal note: I'll likely be slower than usual to respond to things for the next couple of weeks. My sick mother received some bad medical news yesterday, so I'm flying back to the UK on Tuesday.

I dont know if i said it at the time but the effort folk like James puts in to giving us these full edits is much appreciated and never overlooked or taken for granted.
As said before am currently going thru the Merton years (up to Series 56 Episode 8 and not looking forward to the end of Clements time on the show*) but plan to go back to the Williams years as i haven't heard so many of those so these extended edits will be fascinating to hear.
*Going off on a tangent one of the funniest things i've ever heard on the show is the following from Clement (Series 53 Episode 4 - show #698)
"The highlight of my day this morning was when I walked into my hotel lift and inadvertently hit a woman quite hard into the front. And I apologised to her, explaining that if her bosom, if her heart... I made a mess of that..."
(Paul interupts but Clement is allowed to tell the story)
"I banged against this woman with my elbow, and we were both startled, and I said "if your heart is as soft as your bosom, you will forgive me," and she said "if your willy is as hard as your elbow, I'm in Room 264."
JAM had to wait 31 years to be able to get that sort of gag on air. But it's mild compared to what the Kenneths (Horne and Williams) managed to get away with on 'Round the Horne' in the mid-to-late 1960s.
The 'Bona' skits in particular were delightful because the BBC management - being just so Eton and Harrow - didn't even recognise the vulgarity the lads were getting away with. And of course Horne was so straight and wide-eyed-innocent in his delivery that he - like Humph on Clue - could never be accused of being deliberately rude.
Hilarious stuff.
Even recently, Julian Clary is so deadpan and well-spoken that even when he ejaculates his sauciest material it's hard to be sure you didn't misinterpret what he seemed to imply. Far more outrageous, but far classier than similar characters such as John Inman's in 'Are You Being Served' and Melvyn Hayes' in "It Ain't Half Hot Mum".
e.g. 'The Pump room' is a favourite of mine - ep.768, from 1998-07-28).
Thinks: It would be amusing to hear Paul deliver some of Julian's lines in a flat, butch Cockney accent. I wonder how they'd sound...
