Pump up the volume

Anyone else have this problem. We listen to JAM (and other BBC internet broadcasts) on our tablet PC, but the volume setting it is usually broadcast at is lower than for most audio (the little flickery level meter only goes half way) and we can't hear it as a family over sunday breakfast. I have to do clever things using audacity, or amplify it with a stereo before we can hear it. It's not just gip because listening directly gives us the same result.

Are we going deaf, is it our tablet and laptop that are unusually quiet?
