Topic: Pump up the volume

Anyone else have this problem. We listen to JAM (and other BBC internet broadcasts)  on our tablet PC, but the volume setting it is usually broadcast at is lower than for most audio (the little flickery level meter only goes half way) and we can't hear it as a family over sunday breakfast. I have to do clever things using audacity, or amplify it with a stereo before we can hear it. It's not just gip because listening directly gives us the same result.

Are we going deaf, is it our tablet and laptop that are unusually quiet?

I have noticed similar behaviour, so no, it isn't you. Other than
normalising the volume, I can't suggest much. Radio 4 shouldn't exhibit
this problem too much, but Radio 3 is very difficult for me to hear, even
with normalisation. The reason, I'm guessing, why they do this is to allow
enough head room so you don't get clipping and distorted audio, but it does
make it harder to hear. The only other suggestion I have is to get some
better speakers. Basic computer speakers are fairly inexpensive, but they
by themselves won't eliminate the problem. Winamp has a normalisation
plugin which helps. Since you're using Audacity anyway, you could see if it
offers volume compression. That is to say there might be a way to compress
the volume levels to make them more audible rather than having such a wide
range.

I got sick of having to use headphones to hear my laptop. So I googled my operating system (windows 7) and my problem. I got help, cannot remember what, and just by going into somewhere in the control panel was able to get my computer shouting back at me. It is there, you just have to google your op sys and find it. Don't give up the first answer you read. Someone has suggested more than just lift the slider on the volume icon.

I just found playback sound low, I put "volume" in the bottom left search programs and files, and just was able to move the sliders up.  There are other methods after this.

Hi! Do you add the file to your tablet PC through your computer, or do you directly download from a website? I ask because I often have to change the volume metadata of JAM files when I've downloaded them from websites. The best way, and I HATE that this is the best way, is to use Itunes *bangs head against the wall in punishment for mentioning an Apple product*. Drag the file into Itunes, right click on it, click show info or similar, and find the options tab. Pull the slider to the right to make it louder. then click okay.

The problem with Audacity is that you have to re-convert the file to fix the volume. This can be in issue with sound degradation. Just my 2 cents.

You may find this program helpful:

wxMP3gain Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives
It is portable so it will not mess up your computer hopefully

Yeh, I've got Windows 8, but with a free program that makes it look like classic windows (Classic Start Menu). I then got my start menu back. In the bottom left I can write volume, or speakers, and then up pops some options with Adjust System Volume. I click on that. One can slide up the sliders. But click on the Speakers Icon (under Devices) and there are a whole raft of sliders and options. Play with them. There is an option to go back to default. One option I tried had all the background noises but none of the voices so I got rid of that.
