A pal had me write this to her. I thought I'd post it here given it stars our own Ross Noble and two rare JAM attendees Jason Manford (as Leo Bloom), and Phill Jupitus. Ross and Phill both play (ed) Franz Liebkind. It is still playing in UK theatres.
The Producers - the play differed from the movie, in that they combined the That's Our Hitler guy into the German Guy and the Camp Director so their roles were expanded. They actually had a Swedish girl dance on stage in a bikini, and being on the front row I found that to much exposure!!!!. There were the main players Max, Leon, the Director, his Camp Assistant, the German, and the rest of the characters were played by a large cast doing quick costume changes. They also danced around changing the scenery too, a quick removal of sofas and turning of things and the props revolved. So a mixture of speech and music. Everyone threw themselves into it, apart from Leon, whose part was always of shy person. The rest were just extroverts. Max had a long piece of dialogue just into space, recapping on the adventure that had led to his downfall, and of course ranting at speed brought huge applause for this set piece. I am sure there is a theatrical word for this. The actual performance of Springtime for Hitler was less snazzy than the movie, as the ensemble where not tall, slim Nazis sporting tight Nazi uniforms, but rather dumpy men and less glamorous ladies. There were lots of jokes not heard in the movie, some more risqué, such as those in relation to Max's little old ladies. Well worth going to see. We at the front stood up to clap at the end, but they never had an additional curtain call, just the one and gone. Ross Noble stole all the scenes he was in, as did the US guy David something or other. He was wonderfully camp with a camp twinkle and a deep (baritone) voice to carry it off. Go to the Producers Tour (UK site) to see the details of cast and shows remaining.
