Topic: Upgraded versions of JAM Series 1 episodes

Upgraded versions of all the available episodes of Series 1 are now
available in the Links area of the Group. See:

JAM 1967-1968 (Almost) Complete Series 01 - Improved Quality

The previously available versions were very poor quality indeed. This
set was obtained from a Melbourne collector and were originally
recorded from ABC Radio National from AM broadcasts. The quality of
these recordings is much better, but they do suffer from the heavy
audio compression that is traditionally applied to AM transmissions.

Enjoy!

Thanks for these.

Having the better quality doesn't make these 'easier' to listen to. As
mentioned on David's website these are almost more historical
interest. A few comments come to mind

everyone is so serious, there is little sense of fun. The chemistry
which was to develop isn't there yet
the rules are evolving - Nick allows some repetitions (eg over and
over or of people's names) yet there are some obvious ones that people
miss.
you can't repeat the subject
the rounds with the words you can't say are frustrating.

In some ways it is a surprise, but thank goodness, that the show was
allowed to keep going.

It is rather than a good writer's juvenilia - the serious student
finds it interesting, but you wouldn't send someone to them to get
hooked on the show!

On this occasion Martin deserves 100 percent of the credit - his new
versions have nothing to do with me.

As to your general comments on the shows themselves - I agree. I
think I wrote on my website that they are really only of historical
interest.

What a difference Kenny made to the show. He was of course a cult, an
enormous cult... and the spun gold hair helped as well.

the only pre Kenneth episode I have is the one with the opening subject 'How to Stay Lovely' as I feel that is not only a good episode, but a nice one on which to introduce the show in a pre-Kenneth Williams manner, as it also has both Aimi MacDonald and Andree Melly on the show, subsequently it would be the last or only time they would appear together before Kenneth came along.

I agree, I can barely listen to these because of the over seriousness of the show at this point, the only one I seemed to like in the pre-Kenneth days was the one with the opening subject "How to Stay Lovely", as it was a nice pre-Ken transition.
