Yeh, I've got Windows 8, but with a free program that makes it look like classic windows (Classic Start Menu). I then got my start menu back. In the bottom left I can write volume, or speakers, and then up pops some options with Adjust System Volume. I click on that. One can slide up the sliders. But click on the Speakers Icon (under Devices) and there are a whole raft of sliders and options. Play with them. There is an option to go back to default. One option I tried had all the background noises but none of the voices so I got rid of that.

Doesn't work for me - mebbee depends on what version of Windows your running. I've got Vista

I just found playback sound low, I put "volume" in the bottom left search programs and files, and just was able to move the sliders up. There are other methods after this.
