Topic: Repeat episode - what's the number?

Message 1 / 12

Tonight's episode is listed as Series 73 Episode 8 of 8 - but it was previously broadcast as the Edinburgh Special between Series 72 and 73. So how do we number this?

I already have it as JAM857 S72ESP Whisky Galore, now I have a duplicate which is JAM865 S73E08 Whisky Galore. And if you follow Dean's numbering then this Episode 8 is already listed as Episode 1.

My brain hurts . . .

My suggestion is to make S73E08 number 857a, the add "Repeats 2015-08-24 S72ESP" 857 to the end of the file name.  I'll probably replace today's audio file with a text file.

Cheers

"857a" sounds like a good solution, it avoids having two numbers for one episode.  But it means the show will not appear in its correct place in my files list: there will be 2 entries at JAM857 which will puzzle me on future occasions when I have forgotten all about this (with my sieve-like memory that will be next week).

I think I will go with your idea of putting a text file in place of today's recording, just to remind me.  Of course that will have to be numbered JAM865 and when the next series starts I will have to use that number again for the first episode.

This is the sort of thing that could confuse a stupid person .. .

following the precedent here in this series Just A Minute radio season 32 1998 where they also played a show as a one-off at an odd time and date and then played it as normal in the following season, I will probably re arrange the shows so it is numbered with this week's show at number 8... so it follows the season as it played out.

But the overall list here Just A Minute episode list will remain chronological.

However open to arguments to the contrary!

I'm tempted to just ignore the last broadcast, declare that this series had 7 episodes and number the next episode #865.

I'm guessing we're the only bunch who actually refer to the numbering system to uniquely identify episodes, I'm happy to use whatever we agree on here.

what I'm suggesting means renumbering all eight shows -  so either way the next will be #865.

but as I say if people feel strongly against, I'm open to going with the flow.

Hi Dean. I'm trying to follow your plan.

Do you mean this series to have 8 episodes, and retain the duplicate?

my current plan is to renumber to follow the numbers the BBC used.

ie 857/73/1 Paul, Gyles, Janey, Joe Lycett
858/73/2 Paul, Julian, Jenny, Susan
859/73/3 Tony, Gyles, Andy, Sue
860/73/4 Paul, Sheila, Jenny, Josh
861/73/5 Paul, Julian, Jenny, Susan
862/73/6 Tony, Gyles, Andy, Sue
863/73/7 Paul, Sheila, Jenny, Josh
864/73/8 Paul, Gyles, Susan, Tom Allen

The logic is that this the story of the season as it eventually rolled out and treats the one off playing of the last show as an aberation. Of course there will be a note on that recording that says the date when it first played.

That is what I did on season 32 linked to earlier in this thread where ep 4 was played several months earlier but I put it back in its slot in the season when that rolled around, and it was "repeated".

Hopefully that explains it better?

I don't think it makes sense to treat them as if they were different shows (I haven't heard this week's show but assume it was the same show that played in August.)

I think we should do the same as was done for #483 (s32e04). Originally that broadcast would've been #480 but it was renumbered after it was repeated with the rest of the series:

483/32/4 8 September 1997 and 24 January 1998, Nicholas Parsons with Paul Merton, Derek Nimmo, Clement Freud and Peter Jones, logjam.

It may also be worth waiting to see what the BBC do when they release the season as a complete download and CD set, both of which are listed on Amazon. It may be more straightforward and user-friendly to simply follow the example set by the commercial release.

Does the Beeb number their episodes sequentially from the beginning?
