As I strode beside the river today I started wondering:
Apart from Saint Nick, which is the earliest JAM player who is still alive?

Reference to Dean's mighty list suggests it is Sheila Hancock (now aged 83), who first appeared in episode 2.

Nothing at all is known about Wilma Ewart (ep 1), and I can't find if Carol Binsted (ep 2) is still with us.

P.S. Dean - Carol's surname does not have an "a" in it. You might want to adjust http://just-a-minute.info/eps.html.

According to the Radio Times, the BFI and IMDb, Carol's surname does have an 'a' in it:

Carol Binstead
If you remember, Mark, I also tracked down some footage of her from a television show that she presented in the sixties, where she was also credited as "Carol Binstead". I used a screenshot from it for the profile picture of her in my database.

The elusive Wilma Ewart is still the only guest of JAM that I don't have a picture of...

Interesting. I found references to someone who should be her - without the 'a' - at

All of these lack the 'a' in the surname.

Interesting.

You're right, Mark. There do seem to be numerous entries in the Radio Times from when Carol was a regular on Petticoat Line, where her surname is spelt without the "a".

In fact, the women's discussion programme, "Petticoat Line" (1965-1976), does seem to have quite a significant link to JAM. It was devised by Anona Winn and Ian Messiter. Anona Winn appears to have been "in the chair" for every episode (over 500 broadcasts). Guests on the show included Renee Houston, Beryl Reid, Lucy Bartlett, Marjorie Proops, Charmian Innes, Barbara Blake, Miriam Carlin, Bettine Le Beau, Joan Bakewell, Juno Alexander, Teddie Beverley, Isobel Barnett, Eleanor Summerfield, Jacqueline Mackenzie, Katherine Whitehorn, Barbara Castle, June Whitfield, Betty Marsden, Aimi MacDonald, Jean Marsh, Elaine Stritch, Andree Melly, Shelia Hancock and, of course, Carol Binste(a)d.

That's 26 names that I spotted just by scrolling through the listings, all of whom have appeared, at least once on the panel of Just a Minute! One episode in particular, from December 1967, caught my eye because every person credited is also associated with JAM. It was produced by John Cassels who produced 8 episodes of JAM and was recorded at the Playhouse Theatre in London, home of many early JAM recordings:

PETTICOAT LINE - BBC Radio 4 FM - 4 December 1967 - BBC Genome

Petticoat Lane....Radio 5 has been the background to myself life for 50 years. I haven't heard this programme mentioned since I was a lad. Amazing. I doubt I listened.

But JAM, as we had the radio on after 6pm every night over tea (evening meal), I would have listened to, or rather heard, the programme since it started. Sat at my high chair!

Actually, Dave, we were referring to a discussion programme called Petticoat LINE, not to be confused with the comedy show called Petticoat LANE, which starred Elsie & Doris Waters, Max Wall, Micheal Howard, Benny Hill and Peter Sellers and ran for almost six months (23 weeks) on the home service in 1949.

In fact, I found another Ian Messiter classic, "Right or Wrong?", while browsing through the Radio Times database which goes on to mention three other shows of his:

Right or Wrong? - BBC Radio 2 - 15 June 1972 - BBC Genome

The game in which it's better to be wrong than right

with Jon Pertwee, John Cleese, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly,

their chairman Clement Freud and this week's special guest Denis Norden.
Devised by IAN MESSITER, whose Fair Deal is on Tuesdays on Radio 4.

Two other programmes of his, Petticoat Line and Just a Minute, return in the autumn.
Producer CHRISTOPHER SERLE

What a great cast!

Ah, In my childhood I heard only Petticoat Lane and did not realise it was Line. 1949 is too early for me.

I wonder how Clement was in that show.

The BBC did have some dross on the 6.30pm slot. They stuck Brain of Britain, Top of the Form, Going Places (a what to do at the weekend) show, My Word, My Music (groan) in today's comedy slot, but also good stuff like Dads Army, Jimmy Clitheroe, Just A Minute. So I wonder if Clement's show was a funny one or a boring one.

"Right or Wrong?", devised by Ian Messiter and hosted by Clement Freud, only lasted for two series:

Series One, Radio 4, 6.15-6.45pm
11 Aug 1971 John Cleese, Jon Pertwee, Andrée Melly, Barbara Kelly, Arthur Askey
18 Aug 1971 Willy Rushton, Richard Murdoch, Sheila Hancock, Andrée Melly, Michael Crawford
1 Sep 1971 John Cleese, Pete Murray, Sheila Hancock, Andrée Melly, Henry Cooper
8 Sep 1971 John Cleese, Pete Murray, Sheila Hancock, Andrée Melly, Patrick Moore
15 Sep 1971 John Cleese, Willy Rushton, Andrée Melly, Anthea Askey, Beryl Reid
22 Sep 1971 John Cleese, Willy Rushton, Andrée Melly, Anthea Askey, Spike Milligan

Series Two, Radio 2, 8.00-8.30pm
20 Apr 1972 Jon Pertwee, Willy Rushton, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly, Lord George-Brown
27 Apr 1972 Jon Pertwee, Willy Rushton, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly, Raymond Baxter
4 May 1972 John Cleese, Willy Rushton, Andrée Melly, Anthea Askey, Jack de Manio
11 May 1972 John Cleese, Willy Rushton, Andrée Melly, Anthea Askey, Terence Alexander
18 May 1972 Jon Pertwee, John Cleese, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly, Teddy Beverley
25 May 1972 Jon Pertwee, John Cleese, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly, Leslie Phillips
1 Jun 1972 Jon Pertwee, John Cleese, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly, Bryan Forbes
8 Jun 1972 Jon Pertwee, John Cleese, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly, Graham Hill
15 Jun 1972 Jon Pertwee, John Cleese, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly, Denis Norden
22 Jun 1972 Jon Pertwee, John Cleese, Barbara Kelly, Andrée Melly, Robin Knox-Johnston

You'll notice Andrée Melly was the only panelist to be in all 16 episodes, John Cleese appeared in 13 with both Jon Pertwee and Barbara Kelly managing 9 programmes.

Of course, the next question is, have any of these shows survived? I'm sure there's quite a few of us in this group who would like to listen to them...

Absolutely. I would love to listen to this show especially that John Cleese was one of the panellists.
