Topic: Clement inserts the knife

I'm up to 1975 and Clement is becoming increasing vitriolic at Nic's vacillation about the rules of the game - e.g. one round a plural is ruled to be different to the singular, but in the next round it's certainly not different. One week "BBC" is stupid nit-picking, and the next week it's a clever valid challenge.

In JAM-1975-01-20@186,S09E19=Concealing_The_Body, Clement lays a particularly cunning and brutal trap.  At the 19:33 marks we hear this:

NP: No a bit too tough. I don't think she really hesitated, no Derek. No, 45 seconds for you to continue with the old fashioned look Andree starting now.
AM: What I do is to wear my clothes for 10 years. They are bound to be in fashion at least twice. And that gets around the whole matter. There is of course another kind of old fashioned look...
BUZZ
NP: Clement Freud.
CF: Repetition of 'of course'.
NP: Yes, a tough one but correct. So Clement...
CF: Only your memory against ours.
NP: Which it has always been.
CF: She hasn't actually said 'of course', but I wondered how your memory was!
PJ: It's like Russian roulette isn't it really!
NP: I can say your memory must be very bad because I heard her say of course twice. And if you didn't hear her say it, then it must be an inspirational challenge. But as it was accurate you get a point for it and you take over the subject and there are 36 seconds left, the old fashioned look starting now.

For the record, she had definitely not said 'of course' already in that round. Clement can be a dirty fighter when he's aggrieved.

Cheers
Mark

Crafty! I went and listened to that episode. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I read somewhere that in a 1981 recording Derek Nimmo set off a stink bomb. Does anyone remember which recording it was?

And while I’m at it, here’s below a page with some JAM funny moments

Hope this is of some use.

Cheers,

Nicholas references this moment in his "Welcome To Just A Minute" book with a transcript of the incident. Not only the stink bombs, but Derek also ended up putting a safety pin in his nose and throwing up some plastic snow. That was one recording I would have loved to have seen with my own eyes, it sounded like an absolute riot. :)

Many thanks gents. Have listened now to that episode and yes it was totally worth it! I’d have to admit though I thought from what I read that the stink bomb incident itself had made it to the broadcast if you know what I mean.

On a different note, if you listen to The Unbelievable Truth, have you noticed that in the latest instalment (s 16 ep 3) D Mitchell awarded a bonus point for an incorrect but a good challenge? N Parsons signature, right? If memory serves it was the first time and I personally think it’s a good idea to introduce to the programme.

Yeah I noticed that too. I haven't heard him give any bonus points before either. It's good. I think that game could do with them. :)

Nic got more accurate later. I don't know what his epiphany was. Now he still makes errors, but these seem to be planned to, say, give someone more airtime.

He also used to say he made a living out of being pompous. He did, playing straight man to all those comics. So that was in his blood. Thankfully as those comics died off Nic just became Nic. And teasing Nic about his deviant habits is more fun than just Nic-baiting any day. Mind you, I don't recall much teasing in last few years.
