I've sometimes wondered whether guests are given the subjects beforehand.

I found it interesting that in # 222 - S11E03=Keeping_Fit - in Magnus Pyke's first appearance at the 18:37 mark - he says:

MP: Well the international candle is a way of measuring illumination and funnily enough the light you see is different whether you look at it with your eyeball or with a photoelectric circ. And then there is the pakinchi effect. You mustn't forget about that which shows that when you look at different colours you see them in different illuminations. And wait a minute! I've got some more things in my notes here.

So it seems Magnus came prepared with reference notes on the relevant topics.
Shortly afterwards, Nick seems to try to cover up this indiscretion about notes by saying:
NP: While you're referring to your mental notes...

I wonder what other deep and dirty secrets lurk in the JAM.

yes Kenneth in his diaries talk about going to the library to prepare the historical material that he used on JAM, so one imagines Magnus might have been given the same chance.

I think I've said this before on this group, but a few years ago one of the British tabloids wrote a story about this and the producer at the time confirmed that the panellists did have the opportunity to see the subjects they were going to start with beforehand. Most did have a look and if you have been to a recording you can see that some of them do have some notes. I can remember Ross Noble had clearly jotted down ideas on a notepad for example. Sue Perkins is another who has clearly dome some prep.

Some preferred not to and the late great Clement was one who refused to look at the subjects ahead of time on principle.

The producer at the time made the point - and I think it's true - that the real spark on JAM is the banter between the panellists and Nicholas  and of course that isn't prepared ahead of time.

Or is it..........

Thanks, Dean.

Another JAM 'secret' that mystifies me is why they pretended for years that they didn't record two episodes in the same day.
For many moons they pretended that "last week's audience" was better, or that a player said something many weeks ago when - in fact - it was within the hour.

Of course, some years later the bubble burst on that conceit and they freely mentioned that two episodes were recorded end to end.

I can't see the benefit in the previous subterfuge.

I reckon Clement asked Nic to add in subjects. My thesis is Clement would come across a hilarious pun and ask for a subject so he could make that pun. Of course he only did it late on,  I guess.

Take the subject of Fat Boy Slim. Why on earth would Nic have a subject about a private individual who was not in the game and was not a historical figure.  I don't think he would countenance it. Unless Clement really insisted because he wanted to say Fat Boy's Limb. They would be connected via his daughter being involved in pop music broadcasting.

I've heard Clement organised Paul to start talking about Scottish independence so Clement could challenge on the grounds of 'Devolution.'

I believe that is found on Paul's tribute to Clement progamme- Paul tells the story there.

It is probable that at least some panelists have known some of their subjects beforehand, as KW's diary suggests. However, I have heard Nicholas talk on-air about how the show is pure improvisation (these days, at any rate). If there has been any extra preparation in some cases, it has never seemed to prevent the flow of the show and its entertainment value. It can't have happened very often, whatever the case; if it did, why haven't more panelists started right off with perfect repetition, hesitation and deviation-free sixty-second rounds?

Possibly they get asked - what subjects could you talk about? Josie talking about Kilimanjaro - and she had climbed it. Or maybe there is some sort of interview on the phone with new contestants.
