Possibly they get asked - what subjects could you talk about? Josie talking about Kilimanjaro - and she had climbed it. Or maybe there is some sort of interview on the phone with new contestants.

It is probable that at least some panelists have known some of their subjects beforehand, as KW's diary suggests. However, I have heard Nicholas talk on-air about how the show is pure improvisation (these days, at any rate). If there has been any extra preparation in some cases, it has never seemed to prevent the flow of the show and its entertainment value. It can't have happened very often, whatever the case; if it did, why haven't more panelists started right off with perfect repetition, hesitation and deviation-free sixty-second rounds?
