Topic: A tip jar?

I hope no one considers this too vulgar for the list, but after reading Mark’s post on the previous thread today, I was wondering how much it would cost exactly to get him a dedicated server for our well-stocked jar. I for one would certainly be willing to chip in to help raise the funds. Mark already does a sterling service in uploading, audio cleaning, sorting, filing, comparing, editing etc etc. I always have very little to offer in terms of other shows or time of my own, so I wanted to know about our target to give the jar a safe long-term shelf to sit on.
Is there such a thing as a private GoFundMe page or something where others could help out and we could keep a gradual eye on the progress?
Just an idea anyhow, Phil

I think that's a great idea! I know I'd chip in what I could.

I think this is worthy of discussion. I too would contribute what I could. What sort of expenses one is talking about here?

It's lovely of you guys to offer help. It would not be an easy enterprise, I would suspect.

If people wanted to subsidise my hosting costs on an ongoing basis, it gets a bit murky because I also host 4 or so other large sites in the same space - the JamJar is just one corner of the empire. I doubt you would want to fund those as well.  BTW, a dedicated virtual server at a cheap host is $US15 per month.

And if people helped me, it would not be fair to others who also spend money for community benefit, such as Dean's site, our beloved JAM radio, and Martin's quiet but powerful JAM resource site that has helped me many times. They also deserve consideration.

One strategy may be a free cloud site, such as Mega which gives about 200GB free - but I don't know what limitations are placed on file sharing there. I'll have a look at what Mega offers for free and let you know what I find.

A central JAM 'kitty' could be set up to pay for hosting JAM stuff or subsidising those who pay for services that benefit the group, but that would require a treasurer and site manager - and someone to be raided if the copyright police arrive.

Until then, feel free to ponder exciting alternatives.

Regards,
Mark
