Topic: A possible path to an online JAM CLUB

Message 1 / 11

Hi all. Before leaping to expensive and sticky JAM solutions, may I propose a simpler, free JAM supply method? It may offer an anonymous exit door with no fingerprints...

Mega.nz offers free 50GB storage (not 200GB as I thought, but still far in excess of the 18GB that our collection currently requires.)

Note: I WILL NOT BE REPEATING THIS STUFF. THIS IS A ONE-TIME POST!
Copy/paste this stuff if you have to.

The codename is MEGAJAM.

If someone knew that the mega.nz account had a firstname of Just.
And the familyname was Aminute.
And the email was jam@... (which anyone could monitor to see new emails at mailinator, com)
And the password would ALWAYS be the SAME as the one presented at b9fx.com...

And let's say that any one of us could log in with those credentials ...

And because it's a a shared account, akin to a public toilet DON'T MESS IT UP FOR EVERYBODY! This fragile ecosystem depends on cooperation and trust. so don't do silly stuff like changing passwords, or deleting files.

Some Tentative MEGAJAM rules:

- The first rule of MEGAJAM is that YOU DO NOT TALK OF MEGAJAM. The credentials must never leave the Yahoo forum - and even there, you must be careful what you say.
Always fly below the copyright radar.

- You may add content, but do not delete files without community approval. i.e. we'd love you to  add improved versions, but leave the original versions in place.

- All new or improved or edited file versions must be meaningfully named to distinguish them from existing versions. Do not overwrite existing files. Sometimes, new "improved" versions turn out to be inferior to previous versions. Tip: update the version number at the end of the file name and add an explanation of how it's better. e.g. JAM-xxxxx-v3-[Noise-reduced]

- As far as I am concerned, the scope of MEGAJAM is "JAM and JAM related", so you may add content related to JAM or popular JAM players - or perhaps other British radio comedy, if space allows.

If we hit the 50GB storage limit and need to pay for improved storage, we can revisit the contribution debate or curtail our scope.

- Video uploads are OK, if they are truly excellent, and delightful to most JAM fans.

I am uploading 60 random sample JAM files now.
Let's see how this goes.

Alternative strategies are always welcome !

Regards,
Mark

Oops. The MEGA site's  login credentials are not what I thought:

When logging in, the username is Jam@...
The password is unchanged.

I'm sure 50Gb should be enough for a complete jam jar, unless we start adding uncompressed source files...

I took a peek inside - it's looking good. It allows you to generate custom links to individual files and folders but as it's just a resource for forum members to use this shouldn't be necessary.

500x more space than the 100Mb offered by Yahoo!

I use Mega, that's where I put the Merton railway videos, not had an issue with it so far.

The main attraction of it, apart from 50GB for free, is the encrypted storage so no one can snoop on what we store - assuming Kim Dotcom (yes, really, the owner) hasn't given the encryption keys to the Feds. With his history I guess that is highly unlikely, hehe.

One refinement I would suggest would be to have one folder for user uploads and make the others read-only. I gave 'full rights to all' for one of my shared Dropbox folders and some kind user thought they were 'copying' files out but we're actually 'moving' them out which required a full re-upload on my part, sheesh.

I now have one folder for people to upload to with edit rights for all, all my other sharing folders are read-only. This would also cover you for non-destructive upgrades 😀

Just a thought....

Thanks, Don. That sounds wise. I have not spent any time delving into mega.nz permissions or privileges, but maybe i should before too long. :-)

Definitely this is a wise idea! I was thinking with all users having admin rights this will inevitably leads to someone unintentionally messing up the collection, changing the password or something else.

Mark, I've a suggestion if I may, if the size issue is with the other programmes and not with the actual JAM episodes collection, couldn't you use the MEGA site for those extra programmes and leave the JAM collection as it is?

Hi Amro. The JamJar is a significant contributor to my storage space issues.

I've seeded the MegaJamJar with a few dozen episodes for you guys to play with.

Cheers

Hi Mark

Thanks as always for maintaining the jar.  Maybe I need new glasses, but for me (using FireFox in Windows 7) the files you've uploaded to Mega all appear to be listed multiple times in the Mega window.  A few only twice, but the majority three times.......?

I was assuming duplicate uploads were being skipped... I tested this deliberately and dupes instantly were passed by.
Maybe not! It will be a pain synching files if dupes are added to the list instead of being quietly ignored. I will have to check that out.
Thanks for the warning.

Cheers

Well, as usual I'm late to any sort of party but have to say I'm impressed.
I definitely would like to help out in any way that I can, even if it's a backup recording artist.
