I thought you didn't, Dave. I can't say I read about him a lot before but from the bits and peaces I've seen he came across as a decent chap and a family man at that.

Of course this now means the BBC will no longer repeat any shows featuring Clement, so that's 539 JAMs that won't be broadcast ever again, including the elusive S09E15 that I was hoping was going to show up on one of the archive releases at some point. :-(

I didn't think of that. What a huge mess. I do feel for NP to have his life project tainted like this the poor sod.

Does anyone know if they've actually finished recording the current season?

And I was hoping for some nice upgrades during next year's 50th anniversary celebrations, but those will be heavily airbrushed too, I suppose.

Thanks for this, Dean. Good three articles. Brandreth's is very revealing. I think the following passage from the Telegraph's article sums his contribution to JAM nicely: "Freud was never a cuddly stalwart of the Just a Minute panel. Nor does

he rank among its most characterful players: he lacked the electrifying elan of Kenneth Williams, the wry warmth of Sheila Hancock,

the deadpan whimsicality of Paul Merton.

But his wit and erudition was admirable, his emphatic delivery unmistakable, and his tenacity as a competitor added a welcome sense of it all mattering

hugely, for half an hour."

Dare I suggest 'The elephant in the room' as the opening topic for the next JAM season? *too soon for these kind of remarks?*

I feel sorry for Clement's family, but above all, for the young girls whom affected by his unspeakable actions.

And I can only hope and pray that the BBC does not recoil in retrospective knee-jerk horror and cripple the show's past, present and future.

The man is long dead. The horrors linger for his victims, but he was not and is not the show.

A Stalinist revision of JAM history by the BBC to wipe Clement from the record would achieve nothing for anybody - even his victims. It would not help them, nor undo what he is said to have done. Would Hansard redact all of Freud's historical speeches in parliament?

Pretending that he never existed would be as as childish as sticking one's fingers in one's ears and shouting "NA NA NA NA NA NA NA" whenever one hears him speak during an episode of JAM. In fact, I think it would be worse. Pretending that atrocities never happened can only lead to them happening again. If lessons learnt from Jimmy Savile or Rolf or Cosby or King George VI - or a hundred other similar cases were buried and hoped to be forgotten, others could more easily arise.

Some brutal historical facts need to be remembered so they will not be repeated. Fourteen countries have laws against denying the holocaust for this reason.

I think we are intelligent enough to understand that Clement may have been a predatory and repellent reptile without having to smear JAM and its other contributors with the same ordure. Let us and the BBC censure the man and vile acts without harming innocent people.

Let me add that the photo of him in the Daily Mail is as creepy as hell.

Mark

P.S. Damn, this light-hearted mailing list got unfunny REALLY quickly.

I imagine what I feel now is similar to what Bill Cosby's fans have felt over the last two years.  Clement is someone who not only entertained me, but who I admired, and so there's a sense akin to personal betrayal.  Such feelings are, of course, nonsense, and none of us should make this about ourselves; it's about the victims, plain and simple.  I sincerely hope that by coming forward they can find some sort of peace.

I found Gyles' article to be a fascinating, if uncomfortable read.  Despite doing his best to depict how strange of a man Clement Freud was, there were still clearly some fond memories in there.  I have no qualm with Gyles over this because when you've both socialised and worked professionally with a man for over four decades, particularly one who can be as outwardly charming as Clement Freud, it is no doubt remarkably hard to separate one's feelings.

I think the talk of the 50th Anniversary is premature but if I had to guess, I'd say that no mention or Clement nor material he contributed to will be aired.  The BBC's image has suffered greatly as the facts about the coverups in the 1970s have come out and I doubt the corporation will want to go anywhere that might cause someone to even suggest that they're glorifying Clement Freud.

Myself, I'll be taking a break from any material he featured in.  I'm sure it won't be forever, because there are many other great performers on his shows and, sadly, we've long been forced to separate our feelings for an artist from their work.  For the time being, I don't want to hear his voice.

It's a dreadful situation all around, and my thoughts go to the people whose lives he ruined.

The sad thing is that this story was revealed long after Clement died. Why wait so long? He can't easily defend himself now, and this only brings anguish to his family and his friends. There doesn't appear to be any need for it now, nor can there be any sense of justice, only vengeance. While I am not saying it should all be swept under the rug, if you have stayed quiet for these umpteen years, why bother about it now?

I am wondering what will be said about Nicholas after he is dead as well. Will there be all kinds of skeletons that will be brought out for show too? From the snippets we have heard about NP, I am sure there will be many colourful stories about his past that he would rather not be spread about. But if he is dead, what can he say about them then? He certainly won't be able to explain them, or correct them. Maybe he won't care -- as long as they spell his name correctly! And say it all without hesitation, repetition or deviation (well, there might be some deviations).

Sad and surprising news. Have always been a fan of Clements and so shocked to find out what kind of person he really was.

As for the BBC there is no chance they will broadcast or release any episodes of JAM featuring Clement as they will not want to in any way further pain the victims, their families or friends - and who knows how many more will come forward in the future (if any) - and they will be very mindful of what has happened with all the other exposures of celebs over the last half decade or so. It wont be the first occasion where this has happened considering who has been revealed to have had very dark and unpleasant past.
No idea where that leaves JAM when it reaches 50 as it is very difficult to look back and not at least mention Clement considering how often he appeared and how much he contributed. Along with Nicolas, Kenneth, Peter, Clement and Derek guided it thru the 70's and 80's (with many significant contributions from others) and then Paul, Tony, Julian etc have kept it up to date thru the 90's till now. Its going to be very difficult to not mention someone who was on the first panel, was on it for 33 years, and featured in 544 episodes.

On my - now sad - continuing tour through all the JAM episodes, it was a jar to listen today to
JAM-1987-04-04@369,S20E01=Customs.

It included this...

DN: One of the customs I particularly enjoy is kissing little girls or sometimes old ones or even...
BUZZ
NP: Clement Freud has challenged.
CLEMENT FREUD: Deviation!
DN: Clement I said little girls or...
CF: We have a law against that sort of thing!
