hi - have allowed myself to get behind with JAM stuff but am now up to date again.

Thanks to Mark for keeping us up to date with his uploads.

I have blogged a but about the upcoming anniversary and specualted that JAM might end with the 50th anniversary. A subjective view of course, but to me the show is sounding a little tired and I think the Clement Freud incident also casts a big shadow, sad to say.

My thoughts are here - interested in your thoughts.

Dean,

It's a strange time for all this news to break.  Certainly, there would never be a good time for this news to break, but it has rather taken the wind out of the sails as far as celebrating the 50th goes.

Is the show truly not as good as it used to be?  That's a tough question.  It certainly had the feel of a beloved favourite that had seen something of a renaissance in the media over the last couple of years and news of a new series always made me smile as if a familiar friend were returning.

But I find my enthusiasm drained by the terrible news about Clement and that has an effect on my feelings for the show in general.  A shadow has been cast, so to speak, and it's very hard to judge it objectively at the moment.

But, I was listening to the second episode of the current series as I drove to work today (and will hear the rest on the way home) and certainly got some great laughs out of it; the whole argument about chips in particular seems to be a most memorable exchange.  So, perhaps in time my enthusiasm will recover.

I can't bring myself to listen to classic JAM right now.  I would get no enjoyment from an episode featuring Clement Freud.  I'm unconvinced that will be the case for the rest of time because while I'll find no forgiveness for Clement himself, there are so many other great performers whose work I would be robbed of.  Perhaps I will listen to Clement's performances in the same way that I can still go to a sporting event, and hear a Gary Glitter song, and still sing along with the "heys!" -- separate the art from the man.  But that is a long way off, and only time will tell.

I'm sure the BBC will mark 50 years, somehow.  If they were so moved to not acknowledge the anniversary then I suspect that they wouldn't have brought the show back so soon.  When you consider that there are 50 years of JAM then, by aggregate, there are nearly 20 years without Clement.  I think they can draw enough to celebrate Nicholas, and the other regulars, in the 300+ shows that remain.

I'm glad that the victims finally found the bravery to come forward.  I'm also glad that while the show itself evokes some strange emotions at the moment, that it is carrying on.

Interestingly the BBC has heavily promoted the return of Just A Minute for the year by pointing to a statistical achievement.
