Ross Noble was back on JAM today - one of my top two or three favourite panellists.

And Will Self makes a debut! This is different and interesting!

Writing this at work and now can't wait to get home and have a listen!

Paul Merton and Sheila Hancock are the other panellists.

Also the BBC is now saying this is an 8 show season - not six as they had previously said.

Updated appearances for this season - newcomers bolded... 20 shows in total

Paul Merton 18
Gyles Brandreth, Josie Lawrence 6
Sheila Hancock, Graham Norton, Marcus Brigstocke 4
Nish Kumar 3
Tony Hawks, Jenny Eclair, Julian Clary, Tim Rice, Ross Noble, Stephen Fry, Pam Ayres, Holly Walsh, Josh Widdicombe, John Finnemore, Rufus Hound, Zoe Lyons, Esther Rantzen, Katherine Ryan, Alexei Sayle, Will Self 2
Fred MacAulay, Janey Godley, Pippa Evans 1

There's been no Sue Perkins recently.  :( To my mind she's one of the current masters of the game. We're still having a terrific year I think though.

"Hair of the Dog" was definitely an interesting episode. Firstly, Paul alludes to Brexit several times without actually mentioning it. Secondly, Sheila alluded to Clement without mentioning his name with her remark: "I think this is verging on hesitation. It's what somebody else on our panel used to do years ago, of going... very... slowly... like... that, and it is a form, in my opinion, of hesitation".

This episode was recorded on the afternoon of July 21, a few weeks after both the vote to leave the EU and the revelations about Clement's dark past.

Also, there's an obvious edit point after the Sun Cream round where it cuts to Nicholas giving out the final scores, so we didn't get to hear the final round, or indeed Nicholas's usual remark "and we're moving into the final round". Anyone know what the subject was?

I think the reason the BBC originally announced this as 6 episodes was because the series started on August 8, and the two Edinburgh episodes weren't recorded until the evening of August 9 (one at 5.30pm, the other at 7pm), so they only had the 6 episodes recorded in July ready to broadcast.

Thankfully, the Freud allegations haven't stopped the Beeb from making or broadcasting new JAM, so I'm hoping it will continue until, at least, Episode 1000. Long Live Nicholas Parsons, CBE.

Simon

At the time I actually thought Sheila was referring to Kenneth. Only because she does bring him up quite often, and he was the one normally picked up for his slow delivery. Though I must admit, Will Self was much more in the lugubrious style of Clement now I think about it.

Personally I thought, though possibly ruffling a few feathers, Will was a welcome addition to the show. Exactly the sort of thing JAM has been missing really, someone eloquent, and  more than ready to be merciless, very much in Clement’s style.

I do think the show does need someone just like that back in the mix. Whether he will prove popular enough or not remains to be seen, but I hope we could see him again.

Whilst on this subject, are we actually going to see any of these ‘try outs’ from the last few years turning into regular panellists? I thought Andi Hamilton was particularly good, but everyone just seems to go through the interview process without getting the full-time job as it were.
