BBC iplayer downloading

I often notice comments by Jammers posted here about the mysteries of downloading from the BBC's radio iplayer website.

Basically, it's a 2-step process:

1. You get a download link, by opening the iplayer webpage that plays the radio programme you want to download, using the Firefox browser. When that browser has an add-on called 'Greasemonkey' installed, plus a particular greasemonkey script also installed, the BBC page will display a special command line. All the software is available at the link, above.

2. You copy the command line (which contains a url) into a batch file, then run the batch file. It downloads the radio programme using ffmpeg.exe (which is available at the above link).

The get_iplayer program is great - when it works. But when things go wrong there's not much you can do about it. This alternative is more flexible, giving access to much more of the BBC's 'under-the-hood' mechanics that underlie the iplayer website. For example, you are not limited to an .flv format download, nor to a 128 kbps stream. You can get much better audio quality if you want it, up to 1,500 kbps.
