(I tried to post this earlier, but the Yahoo fairies ate it)

Episode 916 is in the Jam Jar.

This is the second Nick-less episode, and two things occur to me:

1. I don't believe Nic just decided to have "a day off".
He only records JAM on about 6 days a year (two series, 12 episodes), and to skip one of these days would be strange decision indeed ... unless a retirement strategy has been hatched and the plan is to wean us off him as chairman. (CUE: X-Files theme music)

2. The whimsical past discussion of chairman succession plans* seems to have been answered. Is Gyles actually the anointed one?

'I'm sorry I Haven't a Clue' had a difficult time replacing Humph with various hosts until Jack Dee got the permanent gig. Maybe JAM will experiment with rotating hosts; maybe Gyles will be the new Chairman Mao.

Regards,
Mark

*Smug Note - on this list on 19 Jan 2011, I pontificated: "Without meaning to start digging Nicholas' grave, who else would you blokes and blokettes like to see as a successor chairman?  It can't be Paul. Gyles?  Certainly vain and pompous enough (and convinced enough of his own theatrical magnificence) for Paul to enjoy shooting at him."

:-)

Actually, since 2010 Nick has been recording 3 series of JAM each year, with one of those series being 8 episodes, which would require him to work at least 10 days a year (I can only dream of having 355 days off each year!)

My guess is that because the dates are booked well in advance, there's no chance of postponing them should Nick become too ill to attend. I'm hoping it's only a minor ailment that prevented him from turning up for work (his first missed recording in 51 years!) and that he will continue to host JAM for many years to come - at least until we get to Episode 1000.

There are several episodes that Nick recorded when he was unwell with a cough and cold, so it must have been more serious for him not to appear - perhaps a throat infection that caused him to lose his voice?

Anyway, here's wishing him a speedy recovery and looking forward to hearing him this evening for the final episode of Series 81...

I also think the most likley explanation is that Nicholas was under the weather . Certainly hoping it's not too serious.

I expect that when Nicholas retires the show will be retired with him. But if it does continue, I'd expect Gyles to be the most likely candidate.

I can see Paul being of the opinion that Nicolas is 'Just A Minute' however I think it will come down to Nicholas's wishes and what he desires.

Personally, I think the show's best days are behind as it is. Something seems to be missing or maybe the format with the players is in need of a serious refreshment.
