Topic: OT - ISIRTA succumbs to censorship

I see in the current run of series 9 on 4 Extra, episodes 5 and 6 are not being broadcast. Although I can guess which parts of each programme are now considered unacceptable in today's climate of not offending anybody who raises their hand and claims to be offended, but wouldn't it be nice to have an explanation from the BBC as to what specifically caused them not to broadcast these episodes?

I don't know specifically which sketches you're referring to, and I don't have the time to research it.

So I don't feel qualified to have an opinion on this topic.

I am intrigued. Would you by any chance have those two episodes and care to share them?

I agree, in some cases BBC censorship seams over the top.

Hi all

ISIRTA S09E05 - scroll to about 17:08 to hear the Uncle Remus watermelon sketch.
They end up cooking a character to make him appropriately black for the sketch.
Yeah, I can see why the Beeb woud have got nervous about rebroadcasting this bit.

Regards,
Mark

P.S. My b9fx.com domain will be disappearing in the near future, if anyone was still using it.

I assume the problem with ISIRTA S09E06 starts around the 23:20 mark with a sketch about native Americans.

à chacun son goût.

I feel I can have an opinion now that there's a description of the scenes in the thread.

For the record, the bit in Episode 5 is completely unacceptable.  For what it's worth, I think "not offending anybody who raises their hand and claims to be offended" is a bit much.  It's not that in 1973 it wasn't offensive -- it's that the people being offended didn't have a voice (and for the most part, were in another country).

Now in the days of the internet and international broadcasting, I think it's completely reasonable to drop the episodes from rotation.

That said -- I'd feel differently if this were a boxed set that was being censored.  When you buy a boxed set, you're buying archive programming -- and everything that program contains.  Preservation is important, so making it available with a bloody big warning on the box seems to me to be the appropriate solution.

But broadcasting the episodes on a free-to-air radio station where anyone, anywhere in the world might just happen to tune in and listen.  Nope -- abundance of caution is the right call.

Yeah, it's kind of a drag for us but...  oh well.
