This weekend Nick and Gyles were due to celebrate their 50-year friendship with a live show entitled "Just a minute or two!" at the Richmond Theatre, just near to where I live, in Surrey (South East London).
It's described on Gyles website as follows:
"No, it’s not an episode of Just A Minute, but it IS a show with legendary Just A Minute host Nicholas Parsons and one of the most regular players of the popular Radio 4 game, Gyles Brandreth.
Gyles and Nicholas met exactly 50 years ago (at a party hosted by Fanny Craddock!) and they are coming to Richmond to celebrate half a century of friendship with varied tales from their different careers - in Nicholas’s case on stage and screen; in Gyles’s case at Westminster and in those colourful jumpers. They will also tell the story of the night when together they both broke the record for making the longest-ever after dinner speech. That lasted 11 hours! This show won't – but it will include plenty of laughter and name-dropping, and some of their favourite humorous poetry, from the likes of Edward Lear and Ronnie Barker.
Plus: post-show meet-and-greet while Nicholas signs copies of his book, Welcome to Just A Minute, and Gyles signs copies of his new anthology of poems to learn by heart, Dancing by the light of the moon."
The ticket website now says that Nicholas "is still a bit under the weather", and that instead Gyles "will now be joined by another national treasure: comedian and comedy writer to the stars, Barry Cryer."
They've also amended the show description to read as follows:
"Gyles and Barry will share stories from their lifetimes of laughter. Gyles, of course, is a regular on Just a Minute and has been since 1983 and reflects on his time in Westminster and in those colourful jumpers. While Barry is a regular on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and has been since 1972 and will talk about his time as a writer, comedian and actor.
Join us for an unforgettable Saturday afternoon.
Plus: post-show meet-and-greet while Gyles signs copies of his new anthology of poems to learn by heart, Dancing by the Light of the Moon."
Let's hope Nicholas recovers for Series 86 of JAM later in the year...
