Topic: Paul Merton's First Appearance

I was just listening to episode 390 - (Episode 2 of series 25) and
according to Dean - this is Paul Merton's first appearance. Yet -
Nicholas - who we all now makes a great production of introducing
'virgin' guests - introduces Paul with - "We welcome back Paul
Merton". It seems an odd mistake to make. Any thoughts?

Also - I seem to remember Nicholas made a tribute to Peter and to
Derek when they died - did he ever do one for Kenneth? I haven't heard
one, and considering he was THE panelist in those days - seems
strange! Again - any thoughts!!

It's not a mistake on Nicholas's part. It may well be Paul's first
aired appearance on Just A Minute, but his actual JAM debut was in
Episode 393 ("Pinching", alongside Tim Rice, Derek Nimmo and Peter
Jones). In this episode, Nicholas announces Paul as playing it for the
first time. I suppose they just decided to air a different episode
featuring Paul before this particular one.

It's not the first time a new panellist's actual debut has come after
his/her second appearance. If I recall, Lee Simpson's appearances are
switched -- his actual "debut" episode aired in 1995, yet he was first
heard in 1994.

Also, I don't recall Nicholas doing tributes for either Peter or
Kenneth, only for Derek.

I wish they had played these shows in a different order as I am
constantly asked about this - of course everyone assumes I've got it
wrong. the other one I'm always asked about is Derek Nimmo's last
appearance.

The first time Paul appeared on JAM, his debut appearance is 390.

But they played the shows in a different order than they were recorded.
So he recorded another show (393) BEFORE he recorded 390.

Nevertheless it would be absurd and certainly very confusing to try to
order the shows in any order other than broadcast order.

On tributes, Derek died while a season of JAM was on the air so it would
have been strange if some mention hadn't been made of it. Peter and
Kenneth died while the show was not on the air.
