Topic: The new Monday R4 rotation?

Message 1 / 9

I was a bit surprised to find that the normal rotation of Monday BBC R4 comedy on Mondays - typically including JAM, TUT, Clue, MOC [ Museum of Curiosity] - had been usurped by a brand new show, Nature Table, a MOC-style show hosted by Sue (dog bless her bobbysocks) Perkins.

In the past year, the sequence in that R4 timeslot has been:

JAM - 2019-08-05 to 2019-09-23
MOC - 2019-10-01 to 2019-11-05
Clue - 2019-11-11 to 2019-12-16
TUT - 2019-12-30 to 2020-02-03

JAM should have next in rotation, according to the previous pattern - but it has been bumped.

Forever?

I guess it's no surprise really... at the very least they will want some time to think whether it's time to give it a rest.

One would have thought that the BBC would have foreseen this situation and devised a contingency plan long ago.

I'm sure they've discussed it over the years but I wouldn't have expected then to make final decisions before now. They obviously delayed recording any more while Nicholas was ill.

I was wrong about Clue when Humph died so I am no prognosticator. I used to think that Paul was such a big name that if he wanted to continue, they would keep it going - but I am not sure he is such a big name now as he was say 10 years ago. Still - if he is keen to continue, presumably with Gyles in the chair, that would still be a factor in its favour. But perhaps not a clincher.

Chiming in with my 2 cents here - pardon if I step on toes, I haven't posted for a LONG time - I'd like to see a maybe younger host, with newer players. To be honest, I became bored with the same rotation of players over the past few years and have skipped listening to them, preferring TUT.

I have no idea what JAM's "ratings" have been like recently, but I for one would LOVE a fresh influx of guests that stayed for more than two episodes per season.

Considering it took over a year for ISIHAC to return with guest hosts after Humphrey Lyttelton's death, I'm sure it will probably be the same. I really want the show to continue, but if this really spells the end of JAM, then I guess I can deal with it. 52 years? It had a good innings.

I really do miss Nick, I have to say. I haven't been able to listen to JAM since his death. I feel like I lost a favourite uncle or grandfather, and it's still pretty raw feeling.

I have mixed feelings on it continuing but don't want a rushed new Chair.

Even though our Nick was unique in his style of chairmanship, and I along with many others are truly sad about his demise, surely the old adage, "The Show Must Go On" will apply if the BBC consider that money can still be made from future editions with a new chairman. It will be interesting to see who gets the job and how similar or dissimilar to Nick, that person tries to apply the rules.

What I am grateful for is the great number of recordings we have that can be revisited and enjoyed over the next period of my life.

I'm fairly certain that the decision to add 'Nature Table' to the Monday line-up was made prior to Nicholas's passing. I review the radio schedules every two weeks, and first noticed it about 25 Jan.

Just as it seemed like he was destined to go on forever ... a VERY sad day.
