Starting a fresh thread on the show's future and if it has one, whose host should be
already lots of good comments on this.
On the show's future - someone asked if I had an inside info, I definitely don't. It just seems to me that if the Beeb intended to continue with it, they would have said do by now. But as someone suggested, the virus lockdown may have had any planning on hold. I know the virus has hit the UK very hard (my condolences if you have lost a friend or relative).

I think if JAM continues, it is about 90 percent likely to be Gyles. He knows the show and its performers, he knows how the show works, he can be a worthy adversary for Paul and he has some of Nicholas's traits. I can see him as a target for much abuse and teasing as Nicholas was (until the last few years).
Still if it isn't Gyles...
* it will almost certainly be someone currently associated with the show.
* I would think they would like a woman - but I can't think of an obvious candidate. I think Sheila would be good, but I'd be doubtful they would pick someone of her age. Sue Perkins, if she'd agree to commit to it. I don't see Pam Ayres or Jenny Éclair doing it. Josie Lawrence maybe???
* Julian I think suggested someone younger - this is a good thought too - but who? I was wondering about Josh Widdecombe?
* I think there are two possibilities. Stephen Fry is the sort of big name they'd love to have associated with the show and he would bring a different and very comedic dynamic to it. As QI is now well behind him, he might be keen on taking on another panel show.
* My other thought is Julian Clary - it would be different to Nicholas, but a bitchy, camp host with withering putdowns might just create a new dynamic that freshens things up.
Incidentally - Nicholas really played the role of "straight man" or "feed" over the years - I have been trying to think of someone who is doing this at the moment - an Ernie Wise type figure? Any thoughts?
cheers, dean

Giles Brandreth stood in for Nicholas on a couple of occasions last year or the year before. Were there any unbroadcast try-outs?
There was series 2 or 3 when they rotated the chair, and there were several odd occasions when Nicholas took to the panel up until the early 80s. But I think Nicholas outlived everyone other than Gikes who chaired against him as panelist.

Wasn't it about a year ago or more that there was a long discussion about a replacement for Nicholas -- when he was having some health issues? I seem to think there were a few "tryouts" with other hosts.... whatever came of those?
I'm sure the producers have been thinking about this for a very long time. But it would be very difficult for anyone to step in right after Nicholas. I would think any replacement, no matter how long it has been after Nicholas' death, would have a difficult time of it; they would be quickly replaced by someone else, and they would provide that 'buffer'. We do that with political leaders quite often.
