Topic: What's your favourite team combination?

Message 1 / 11

Whilst listening to some of the older episodes recently I was struck by
the notion that the team combination I really enjoyed most was Kenneth,
Derek, Peter and Sheila. There was such a wonderful balance with
Kenneth's exuberance, Peter's dryness, Derek's cheek and Sheila's
attempts to keep up!

I think its time that Sheila was brought back to the show, and indeed I
was delighted to see Maureen making a rare re-appearance after some
years... its not just a programme in which to showcase young comedians!!

Actually, Sheila has been brought back in recent years. She made a
surprise reappearance in 2002, and also was one of the panellists in
the special one-hour 35th anniversary edition. She also made
appearances in 2003 and 2005. It's been two years now, I think it's
time she was brought back.

Another of the ladies I'd personally love to see make a return is Aimi
Macdonald. She's one of my absolute favourites of the older days of JAM.

Am I one of the only ones that feel that Andree Melly should make a comeback?

anyway, regarding favourite team combinations...  well that is a tough one because there are so many different combinations, and variations over the years its hard to really focus in on one combination of panelists.  mostly because I like the individuals that appear overall.

I'll give it some real thought though.

I agree, and I'm actually still waiting for there to be an all female panel or at the very least something similar to the rare three females to one male ratio panel that was on display during the 1999 television JAM episodes.

I'm still waiting for Victor Spinetti to get the call back, cuz he was excellent during his appearances.  he brought back a vibe not heard since the latter days of Peter Jones, or even the appearances made by Richard Murdoch, that befuddled daft uncle sort of thing.

Actually, I'd be happy to see any of the older JAM females make a
reappearance, Andree included. I just happened to like Aimi the most
of all of them.

no argument there, Aimi is one of my favorites as well, she really utilized her 'dumb blonde' act to great effect for comedy, and played the game in that manner exceptionally well, but also demonstrated a great deal of intelligence as well, showcasing that she could give as well as she got from the other panelists.  and its interesting because as the show entered the '80s she did drop the 'dumb blonde' routine for the most part because she was getting a little older and that sort of thing wouldn't have worked as well for someone in their 40's.

but I definitely wouldn't mind hearing from her again.  :)

That was a great combo, I agree. I'd vote for Clement, Kenneth, Peter
and Aimi - all 15 shows with them are hillarious!

Of course the lovely Sheila was used again but that is some years ago
now and she needs to be heard again!! Lets start a petition!!

Am I the only one who doesn't like Aimi MacDonald? I find her giggly
schoolgirl act makes me cringe, and the shows she appeared in were
slowed down by Nicholas' attempts to flirt, and be chivalrous, giving
her the subject over and over at the expense of the other players and
the game...

Of the older guests I'd like to See Miriam Margolyes, Sandi Toksvig
and Prunella Scales make a re-appearance..... and for the men Michael
Palin and Ian Hislop...

I wouldn't disagree there, I think one of my fav episodes from that combination had this one subject where Aimi had a subject I think on dating, or about being desirable.  and it went a little something like this:

AM: When he leans across the table to light your cigarette, and the cigarette lighter shakes...

BUZZ

NP: Kenneth Williams?

KW: Two cigarettes.

NP: Yes I think we must allow the cigarettes.

AM: Oh no, one was a cigarette, and one was a cigarette lighter!

NP: I know but it was too late. I’m sorry, it wasn’t too late, but I thought you were going to say a cigar. But no, no, you did say the word cigarette twice.

AM: Cigarette lighter’s hyphenated!

LAUGHTER FROM THE AUDIENCE

PJ: It is, yes.

NP: Is it?

AM: Yes!

PJ: Yes!

NP: Is it?

PJ: Yes!

NP: I didn’t know that.

KW: No it’s not! Shut your rows!

NP: All right then, if it’s hyphenated, she gets...

PJ: She could say cigarette holder as well.

KW: Oh what’s going on here?

NP: The audience, do you think, if you think there’s a hyphen between cigarette and lighter cheer...

KW: It’s no good asking them! They don’t know nothing!

NP: If you don’t, boo, and will you all do it together now.

KW: Look at him! Come from Stratham!

NP: Nothing?

CHEERS AND BOOS FROM THE AUDIENCE

NP: Right the audience say Aimi Macdonald has it, and she has 19 seconds on being desirable starting now.

AM: And the apparatus in his hand begins to wobble....

LAUGHTER FROM THE AUDIENCE

AM: ...then...

BUZZ

KW: I’ve not come here to listen to a load of filth!

LAUGHTER FROM THE AUDIENCE

KW: It’s perfectly obvious why she keeps appearing on this game! Half of them are women! Look at ‘em! Yes! Waves of them rolling! Look at the flesh though! It’s disgusting isn’t it!

NP: What’s the challenge Kenneth?

KW: Well all this deviation about him sitting opposite her with apparatus! One minute he’s taking her out to dinner, the next minute they’re in a chemical laboratory!

NP: Well if you’ve got to think of another word for cigarette lighter, even if it is hyphenated... an apparatus is quite a good word to use, isn’t it.

KW: Oh it’s obvious what side you’re on!

NP: If apparatus means something else to you, then I’m very sorry Kenneth. Fifteen seconds with you Aimi, on being desirable starting now.

AM: Then you know you must be desirable. If however the thing that he’s holding... (dissolves in giggles)

LAUGHTER FROM THE AUDIENCE

BUZZ

AM: No, give it to him! Give it to him!

NP: Kenneth Williams challenged.

KW: No, I haven’t challenged.

NP: Clement Freud has challenged.

CF: I thought she hesitated holding her thing!

LOUD LAUGHTER FROM THE AUDIENCE
that's one of my favorite moments from this particular combination.

I rather liked Aimi MacDonald, although i didn't really like Nicholas' flirting, but let's not restrict to Aimi because Nicholas has flirted with plenty of other ladies on the program quite frankly, but what I did enjoy was when the other male panelists would flirt with Aimi.

and although Nick has given her the subject or been chivalrous to her on numerous occasions, there have been more times when he's been downright UNchivalrous to her even though she was clearly in the right.

besides those moments when Nick would leave the subject with Aimi just added to the comedy, because Aimi possesses a charm that's quite infectious.  any time you heard her speak, you wanted to hear more from her, and not to mention the moments of chaos that are generated when she screws up are hilarious, and also when Nicholas tries to be chivalrous to her, it also elicites some outrageous comments from the likes of Kenneth, because for the most part whenever Ken would say 'We should never have had women on this show', it was usually in regards to Aimi.

at least that's how I'm sure most other people feel about Aimi's involvement with the show, if you didn't like her, that is sad, but hey, we all have our own favorites and non-favorites.

however, I do agree that I would love it if Miriam Margolyes came back, the same with Michael Palin.  Hell, it'd be great if John Cleese or Eric Idle appeared on Just a Minute.

Oh man! I've never heard this cigarette lighter exchange! What episode is it in?

I'd like to see Emma Thompson on the panel myself ...
