One of the pleasures of randomly playing from the JAM archive on my
iPod is hitting new wonders.
This morning picked 324 - getting at an itch in the middle of my back.
Jan Ravens as a first timer does a sterling job (I also love looking
at Dean's cast list to find out about these people - his comments on
her & this episode are apposite). Anyway, she held her own against an
onslaught from Derk and Kenneth. And did well without the usual
galantry to first timers.
The old-mans sexism of Nic stood out - it is probably the thing that
most grates about those shows is the attitude to women - I can stand
Ken's camp anger, but sometimes Nic comes over as a bit much - and
gets in a bit of knot here. Some of it is generational galantry, but...
A real treat is Peter's cataloguing of the categories of challenges -
sharp, good, excellent etc - and his mordant wit collecting and
commenting on them.

this is actually one of my favorite episodes, but sometimes it can be rather irritating in some respects, but then again I usually find Nicholas' behavior irritating in general.
I mean think about it, in the first round Jan gets interrupted in her flow, and has to start over in a different direction, then gets challenged by Kenneth for deviation, pulling her up for doing the exact same things Kenneth and the others frequently do, and then when he gets the subject, the only words out of his mouth in the final 2 seconds or whatever are 'There shouldn't have women on a show like this'. Once the round is over, Jan says 'I challenge him for blatant sexism' and what is Nicholas' reply, 'yes, but he wasn't deviating from the subject'. That is perhaps the most irritating moment in the whole of JAM, because the only thing that Kenneth said had absolutely nothing to do with the subject, which was 'getting at an itch in the middle
of my back', but Nicholas didn't think he was deviating from the subject!?!?!?
Then later on in the show, Peter is essentially trying to defend Jan, saying that his objection to the rude remarks made about her is deviation, but no one gave him the chance to even put those thoughts to words, because they kept hounding him, including the chairman, and in the end Nicholas had the audacity to say that what Peter made was a 'ridiculous challenge'. Peter was the only one brave enough to try and defend Jan against Kenneth and Derek's bullying behavior, and Nicholas was just his usual dithering self.

This is one of my all-time favourite shows, and I love the way Jan
stands up for herself against Derek in particular.
Wasn't Peter Jones great too in that show.

perhaps just to add that at the time when they were quibbling over Jan's
age
JAN RAVENS: My unfavourite kind of neighbours are those that are very
nosey and won’t leave you alone. And also, speaking on behalf of the
younger generation, the people that won’t let you...
BUZZ
NICHOLAS PARSONS: Derek Nimmo challenged.
DEREK NIMMO: Deviation, she’s knocking on a bit!
LOUD LAUGHTER FROM KENNETH WILLIAMS, PETER JONES, IAN MESSITER AND THE
AUDIENCE
KW: Oh it’s marvellous!! Oh innit marvellous!
DN: Please don’t call that the younger generation!
KW: No! Of course not! Look at her!
DN: We can see she’s a middle-aged boot!
KW: Look at her! You can see! You can see! You can see she’s no longer
young! That much is obvious, even to me, and my eyesight’s going!
JR: I’m speechless with rage!
KW: Well it’s an insult you’ll just have to swallow!
At the time, Jan was just... 24. Kenneth and Derek were both more
than twice her age...
