Dean, thank you for helping to straighten it all out for me, and you're right, it supports the argument of the inconsistency of Nicholas's decisions, but does showcase just how the show is always funny.

the first reference was on the 28 August 1982 show with Kenneth
Williams, Sir Tim Rice, John Junkin and Maureen Lipman

NICHOLAS PARSONS: Maureen Lipman begins the next round and the subject
is fads. Can you tell us something about that in the game Maureen
starting now.

MAUREEN LIPMAN: I’m a sucker for fads. Health food, jogging. Isn’t it
extraordinary how the minute you buy your shoes, you stop running. I had
hula hoops, now there’s a funny thing. You walk to school with a big
piece of red plastic around you, gyrating backwards and forwards.
Yo-yos, does anybody remember those...

BUZZ

NP: Tim Rice has challenged.

TIM RICE: Repeat of yo!

ML: Oh! Boo!

NP: It’s a correct challenge. It’s a correct challenge. You see that’s
what the game’s all about, and it’s those good challenges that make it
exciting.

ML: So who remembers a yo?

NP: I think um the thing is Maureen it’s very bad luck on you, but it’s
a good challenge, so we give it to Tim. And there are 43...

ML: Well!

NP: ... seconds on fads starting now.

TR: When my mother gave me a yo, back in 1945, I was extremely happy
with it for a long time...

The next reference is to a show the following year, 4 April 1983 with a
panel of Kenneth, Sir Clement Freud, Gyles Brandreth and Barry Cryer

NP: Gyles Brandreth, another character, 60 seconds for you to talk on
the subject of toys I still enjoy. Would you tell us something about
that starting now.

GYLES BRANDRETH: The principal toy that i still enjoy is the oy-oy, this
is because I am a dyslexic...

NP: Clement Freud challenged.

LOUD LAUGHTER FROM BC AND THE AUDIENCE

KW: I’ve never heard of it. Is there really a toy called the oy-oy?

NP: If you’re dyslexic, if you’re dyslexic, yes.

KW: Oh? How very weird.

NP: Write it down, write it down and read it backwards. Kenneth, Clement
what’s your challenge?

CLEMENT FREUD: Even had it been a yo-yo, it would have been repetition
of yo or oy!

GB: No, it’s a double barrelled word with a hyphen in the middle.

NP: Yo-yo, it is a hyphenated word, yo-yo.

BARRY CRYER: It’s an internal repetition, isn’t it?

NP: No, no, it’s hyphenated, we allow it. So Gyles we’re still with
you...

CF: What, oy-oy?

BC: Yes it is hyphenated.

NP: Yes Clement...

CF: Oy-oy?

NP: Well it must be, he was dyslexic. The hyphen would be there in the
middle whether it’s yo-yo or oy-oy.

BC: It’s still repetition, isn’t it?

NP: No, I think...

CF: Would elephant-elephant not be...

NP: Yes, we allow hyphenated words...

BC: I think Clement’s interruption was one of the finest I’ve ever heard
on this programme.

NP: And so Clement has four seconds on toys I still enjoy starting now.

CF: The toy I most enjoy from my childhood days is called
rhinoceros-rhinoceros!

But there was another reference to the first incident later in the same
year - on 8 October 1983, the panel being Kenneth, Clement, John and
Derek Nimmo

NP: And Clement your turn to begin, the subject is weights. You have 60
seconds as usual starting now.

CF: An awful lot of fuss is made about weights, and people come up to
you and say “you are too heavy, far too fat, carry...”

BUZZ

NP: John Junkin.

JOHN JUNKIN: Repetition of too.

NP: Yes but we don’t bother with those sort of...

JJ: Why is it you never bother when I challenge, but you do when someone
equal challenges?

NP: Well we let little words go, if it goes on for more than couple of
times, then I think we might go. And also he’d only just started. But
I’ll tell you what, as you’re the guest John, we won’t charge anything...

CF: Oh I think you should charge him, especially...

NP: Give Clement Freud another point, as it’s the last round, I don’t
think it’s going to make any difference to the result...

CF: He’s not going to win, is he, I mean, it’s not going to...

JJ: Can I just tell the audience that in a previous broadcast Tim Rice
who happens to be rich and famous and powerful, challenged somebody on
yo-yo, for repetition of yo and he allowed it!

NP: I thought that was a very clever challenge! Yes.

CF: Brilliant!

JJ: Now are we, are we playing the rules, or are we playing your opinion?

NP: Well my opinion comes into every judgement I’m afraid.

JJ: (laughs) Oh this is unfair! This is persecution!

NP: It’s an impossible game on which to be chairman, and you know, as I
said, they can’t find any sucker who’ll take it on, so I have to
continue. And er...

DEREK NIMMO: What I want to know is how much you usually charge? I
didn’t know that you had a fee for this. You just said “I’m not going to
charge you anything for this John”.

NP: Well I did offer Derek...

DN: If he’d offered you more money, would you have given him a point?
That’s what I want him to know.

NP: Oh you mean money in the game? Well I have to earn a living somehow.
You don’t think the BBC pay me to do this job, do you?

DN: I should hope not! I should think you’re probably paid by Capital
Radio to keep their figures up!

NP: I might get some money now from sensitive listeners in all those
far-flung parts of the um... oh...

BUZZ

JJ: Hesitation. Oh sorry!

NP: Right anyway, send your donations in a sealed envelope.

Anyway it all supports your charge of inconsistency I guess - but I
think it also shows how the show is consistently funny!
