Topic: Nicholas Parsons and Jane Gibson

Message 1 / 9

I've been listening to the edition "Breeding Porcupines" (somewhere in
Scotland, PM, CF, FMc & GN), and Nick P was really quite merciless in
his goading of Jane Gibson to "blow the whistle harder". It was clear
that the poor girl, on what was presumably her debut, was struggling
with nerves etc, but Parsons kept on badgering her - excellent quip
from Paul, though ("Is she not blowing hard enough for you, Nicholas?").

I've noticed that Nicholas can be quite cruel and we all know he can be
patronising, but this was quite something else. Can anyone come up with
any other examples of him hectoring one of the whistle-blowers?

to be honest no, in fact the only other person aside from Nicholas who would badger a girl for not blowing the whistle correctly was Kenneth Williams.  I think it was Mary Bell, who took over for Ian Messiter while he was sick, during the mid to late 80's and certainly before Kenneth started feeling so sick that he hardly contributed anything to the show as a whole.

But I agree, Nick just wouldn't leave the poor girl alone and he just kept at her, all because he felt she couldn't blow the whistle properly?  I mean, the girl was already nervous because she was shaking, and the last thing she needed was some damn fool pressuring her to blow the whistle harder.  Its no surprise she didn't stay with the show, she probably had a nervous breakdwon or something.

Cruel seems the wrong word - he can tease the others, but far worse
things are said about him than anything he utters.

Far worse things may have been SAID about Nicholas, but Nicholas has DONE far worse things to the panelists, like stealing the subject away from them while in full flow, just to give it to someone that didn't even challenge, or grabbing their buzzer to challenge just to stop someone from insulting him, or browbeating the panelist into making a challenge they never wanted to make.  and half a dozen other things I've already stated numerous times before, things that other people seem to think actually makes Nicholas funny, when in actual fact it doesn't.

Indeed.

If you read my brief comment again, you'll see I was commenting on
whether Nicholas is cruel, not whether he is funny.

I know, I was merely trying to give examples of his semi-cruelty.  This is especially true when he yells and screams at the audience to shut up or that their being fickle or partisan.

I can't believe that Nicholas Parsons can inspire such passionate
debate!

If I'm being honest, I couldn't imagine anyone else in Nicholas's
chair, and yes, he has put up with a lot of ribbing over the years
(not just from the JAM panellists - see also ISIHAC), but he has a
tendency to irritate me with some of the things he does, most of
which Robert has covered already. That said, the same could be said
of Clement on occasion. Anyway, it's petty to grumble about such
trivial things, especially when, as a whole, Just A Minute provides
me with so much pleasure.

that is true, for all my own personal feelings regarding my dislike for Nicholas' chairmanship, I still find the show to be very entertaining, and more often than not I find myself smiling and laughing at practically everything that goes on in the show.
