Topic: Who would YOU like to become a guest panelist or a semi-regular on JAM?

Message 1 / 20

The one constant that keeps Just a Minute fresh and relevant in the
world of entertainment has to be the revolving door of talent that
comes and goes over the years. Although some have been more
successful than others, it is still without a doubt fascinating
whenever someone new comes onto the show, because you long to hear
more of them as they interact with the more seasoned veterans.

Now, I raise this particular topic and put to you guys as a genuine
query as to who YOU would like to come on to the show?

For my money, I'd love to hear Jon Culshaw from 'Dead Ringers'. he's
a brilliant impersonator, and I remember hearing him on 'Wireless
Wise', and his overall laid back attitude, in the sense of being an
apt improvisor, knowing how to play for laughs, would make him a
perfect fit on the show. Plus, I can't deny that it would be great
hearing him do his Tom Baker/4th Doctor voice while speaking on a
subject.

the only other recent professional impressionist that appeared on the
show was Alistair McGowen, and he was complete rubbish at the game,
not to mention he didn't do any impersonations at all. Before him
was Janet Brown, but she was too much of a one trick pony for my
taste. plus, there's only so much of her normal voice you could take
before wanting to punch a wall.

someone else I'd love to hear on the show would be perhaps an actor
or actress, someone who isn't a standup comedian. I know the few
times that has happened have been rather mixed, but that's not to say
that it can't work.

It would also be nice to hear some more Whose Line alumni appear on
the series, like John Sessions or perhaps even Clive Anderson.

What about the rest of you guys? Any suggestions?

I would DEARLY love to hear Emma Thompson. I think she'd be brilliant!
Maybe get her on the same panel as Stephen Fry (Cambridge reunion!)
and then Paul would say, "Are you two playing your own private game here?"

I used to think having some non-comedians, in the spirit of people like
Patrick Moore and Magnus Pyke would be good. But I now think the
programme has changed so much in the Paul Merton era that having people
who couldn't vaguely keep up with him on the quips wouldn't work.

Lenny Henry and Andy Hamilton I've mentioned before. I agree with Bobby
about Clive Anderson and John Sessions. Others that come to mind for
me - Bruce Forsyth, Barry Humphries (maybe as Dame Edna Everage?), Meera
Syal, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Jonathan Ross, Ant and/or Dec? Rory Bremner,
Griff Rhys-Jones

Alan Davies would be sensationally good, I think. The guys from Little
Britain.

One guy who I think is very funny when talking ad lib, but obviously
more of an actor than a comedian is Ralf Little.

I spose realistically we can't get into American candidates but someone
who I think would be very very very good would be Rosie O'Donnell -
she's so quick and witty but also very argumentative, I can just hear
her arguing with Paul and Nicholas! She'd be a wonderful combo of
Kenneth and Paul with a touch of Wendy Richard...

Certainly would make for an interesting one off, much like Elaine Stritch perhaps.  :)

In addition the people I mentioned before, I think it would be interesting if other Monty Python alumni appeared on JAM, considering it's been about 30 odd years since Michael Palin appeared.

Given John Cleese's and Eric Idle's penchant for surreally sophisticated comedy, and they're both dab hands at improvisation as well, not to mention being exceptionally educated, it would be interesting to hear them bring all those things into the realms of JAM.

Robert, they are brit comedians--just not really known here in the
usa- but lenny henry's Chef sitcom is available as is The Kumars at
#42( a chat show of sorts) on dvd here (Meera Syal, Sanjee Bhaskar)
have to admit don't know Ralf Little but then our Brit tv watching
group has mainly been Dr who and sci fi related stuff- trying to get
the guys to show more of the tv quiz shows (like Have I got news for
you or QI)
I got to see Lenny Henry to his one man show last time I was in
london ( got to see paul merton at the comedy store too)great shows
both of them. Miriam

They were also popular in the long-running R4 (and then BBC TV)
series Goodness Gracious Me.

As regards Nicholas in Doctor Who, I still maintain that his finest
hour was in agreeing to play himself in the one-off C4 comedy "Mr
Jolly Lives Next Door". Starring Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayall (playing
exactly the same characters as they always do) as two proprietors of
a male escort agency (employees: them), they receive a commission
from the local gangland boss to "take out Nicholas Parsons".
Misconstruing the request, they proceed to virtually kidnap Parsons
and take him out boozing, carousing and generally giving him "a ruddy
good time". Then they have to try and kill him. It also features the
late great Peter Cook and is a minor classic. Parsons does well to
send himself up and displays some fine thespian flair.

i agree with julia . emma thompson would be brilliant . she is very
witty and i think she may have started as some kind of a stand up
before she became known for her acting .

does anyone thing it is pointless introducing new people on a panell
with paul merton . he is used to being the king of the castle and i
think it would be hard for new players to get a look in .

I don't think so, I mean one used to say the same thing back in the early days when they had an established stable with the Original Foursome, and yet they still managed to bring some new people in.

I don't get the feeling that things are as imperical as they were in the early days.  I mean Tilusah Ghelani is really the one who decides who should be on the show and so on, between those who've played the game before and new people that could be rotated in as well.

Bring in Angus Deayton.

I'd like to see how he'd cope without scripted ad-libs, and secondly
he'd be a prime target for Merton.

it would be kinda amusing for those of us who remember the famous 2002
HIGNFYs, but I guess it's in the probability stakes with Prince Charles
and the Pope making guest appearances.

that's true.  I remember watching on YouTube clips of HIGNFY, and the way both Paul and Ian ripped a new into Angus.  I couldn't stop laughing.  although one wonders if Deayton would even want to appear on the show at all.

I remember that episode well, it truly had me in stitches, in a way it
makes me want to have Ian Hislop back on Just a Minute, simply to hear
him and Paul together. They are always great onHIGNFY and they were
funny when Ian was a guest on Room 101.

Other than that the 2 people I would like to have on Just a Minute
would be Alan Davies (I think I've mentioned this before) and I would
also like Colin Mochrie of Whose Line.. fame to appear, I think Colin
would be really good as he's a good intelligent improviser and he
seems to have a way with words.

Being a fan of panel shows like QI and HIGNFY, I nominate Rich Hall,
Alan Davies and Jo Brand.

Also I trying to think if David Mitchell would be good on the
show...He's very funny but I fear, like Bill Bailey, he may suffer with
slight hesitations. Good to try him out though.

I was going to say Eddie Izzard, but I think I've just read somewhere
he has been on before, so will have to check that one out...

Bring more Comedy Store Players on! We've had Neil Mullarkey and Josie
Lawrence recently, but Richard Vranch hasn't been on in years. Jim
Sweeney's retired and Andy Smart and Lee Simpson have never been on,
have they?...Both very intelligent and funny.

Richard's had nine shows without being all that good. Lee Simpson has
been on - back in 1994-5. Again, fairly average.

I'm not sure about Rich Hall - he seems a bit too laconic to me, though
a one-off appearance might be fun.

Andy Smart would be worth a try though.

Richard Vranch was featured in the televised versions of JAM, but made only one appearance on the radio, and although he was very intelligent and informative, he didn't take enough opportunities to use humor.

I'd love Jo Brand to be on the show as well.  Lee Simpson has been on the show, but the shows where he has apeared, I thought he did rather well, but wasn't very memorable contribution wise.

Thank you to yourself and Dean. I'll have to have a dig around for
those shows.

Shame they didn't do well though, they've always been fantastic on
stage. Maybe it's just the different setting doesn't suit them. It
doesn't always translate that funny people will work on this show.

I was also thinking it would be nice for Hugh Laurie to appear
alongside Stephen Fry. And maybe try out Danny Baker - he would have
lots to say on ANY topic!

if Hugh Laurie were to appear, it would have to be something to the extent that its during his time off from filming the series 'House' and perhaps if Stephen Fry made a personal request for him to appear.  personally, I think it would be rather nice to have a Little bit of Fry and Laurie reunion on JAM.
