My favourite witticism from Fry doesn't come from JAM, but Clue.

He had received some nasty press from the Daily Mirror after his
nervous breakdown when he fled the country, and came to dislike the
editor, Piers Morgan, now a judge on one of those awful reality TV
contest shows.

In the round "New Definitions" Fry offered a new definition for
Countryside - "murdering Piers Morgan" - love it !!

I don't get it.  Countryside in connection to killing Piers Morgan?  doesn't make sense.
I mean you have homicide, suicide, matricide, patricide, fratricide, but something like Countryside in that context doesn't make sense unless you're killing someone from another country or destroying an entire country.

Your mind is entirely too clean for Stephen Fry. I think the easiest
way to explain would be - drop the 'o'!!!!!!

Hope this helps!!

I think it was more how the first syllable of country sounds,  suggesting that Piers is the dreadful 'C' word, so murdering him would be countryside.
Not an altogether unusual suggestion I would guess.   LOL - brilliant!!  Bet Ian Hislop would love that one.

I have been downloading the current series of the US Celebrity Apprentice - VERY entertaining - Piers has met his nemisis in Omarosa.

It is, I think, meant to be a variation on the old gag, beloved of golf club
dinners: "I'm a country member". "Don't worry, I'll remember!"
