I really don't know.  I think for the most part it has to do with the fact that Brits don't take an elitist attitude regarding whether or not the movies is better than television or that television is better than radio, and so on. 
 
here in the states, for the most part, since the advent of television, all sense of creating new strictly radio programming has died away.  Although there are some very rare occasions when you might find some radio programming aside from the usual DJ's and so on.  but you tend to find that stuff on Christian radio stations where they utilize the audio medium to create programming that is both entertaining, thrilling and also delivers a good message to people.
