Let me tell you how this would come down in the US ---it may sound
cruel and heartless, but there's no way any broadcaster would let a
show as popular as ISIHAC end this abruptly. It's too important a
commodity.

I agree with Dean ...if Barry, Graeme and Tim want to continue, the
show will go on....with a new chairman. And this new chairman will NOT
be doing the same job that Humph did for 50+ series----this chair will
have a different "character" scripted for him/her, just as writers
scripted the "Chairman" character that Humph embodied.

I should have added this to my previous note---I could easily hear
Julian Clary as chairman. Of either program. He's got a knack for the
toss-away innuendo so beloved on Clue. And he seems certainly quick
enough to keep up with the panelists.

Or, to go in a completely different directions: Sandi Toksvig. And I
think Gyles Brandreth would be a good chair of either, too.

You wouldn't want a new chairman to be a clone of the old---rarely can
anyone better an original at their own game. Instead, you come up with
a new game ---or character---and give things a new lease on life. It's
like music--no matter how much you love an artist, you can't expect
them to write the same songs over and over again---you might enjoy it,
but the artist would find it stifling.

at the end of the day, it all boils down to whether or not the surviving Clue team wish to continue the show without Humph, and have someone else be the 'chairman' of the show.

But, due to the unique way in which the BBC is funded, it's likely to
be done very differently. ISIHAC has little commercial value; sure
there are a few audio tapes but it's only recently that the BBC has
started to realise the value, for example the recent (and forthcoming)
release of extended recordings.

I also agree. Some said that the show couldn't survive the death of
Willy Rushton. But the wise decision not to permanently replace Willy
brought a fresh breath of life to the show. Perhaps it's heretical,
but I actually prefer the post-Rushton shows. Perhaps ISIHAC may
follow the "Have I Got News For You" model and have visiting chairs.
However if Barry, Tim and Graeme don't want to do it then it probably
couldn't survive the loss of four people.

I certainly hope that ISIHAC will survive; if nothing else the
performers now have a greater personal financial interest in keeping
it going (viz the live tour). However it won't and shouldn't be the
same. It has to evolve and move on.

Kevin.

these are all good comments - I agree with the need not to be a clone.
And yes Julian would be a great choice for either show. I could hear him
being very funny on JAM in that role.

One thing - Sandi Toksvig is already chairing News Quiz so i don't see
her getting the same gig on another Radio Four comedy panel game.

It is sad news. Humph has reached the pearly gates of infinity... I
did read that Ben Schott wanted to host ISIHAC, the trouble is,
whatever the host it wouldn't be the same show at all without
Humphrey Lyttleton.

It would be interesting if they chose Julian Clary as the new chairman.  I think one of his first proclamations would be to feature Sven more often, and all the innuendo jokes reserved for Samantha would be fully exploited for Sven in a very strong homoerotic manner.

I think the best thing to do would be to end Clue now. Just ain’t Clue without Humph.

And yes, I’ve just bought a copy of “It Just Occurred To Me… - the reminiscences & thoughts of Chairman Humph”, a great read full of the humour and pathos that Humph had.
