Is this a new thing - charging for tickets? Or just a non-London
thing? When I've been to see the show being recorded, at the BBC in
London, the tickets have always been free (and, indeed, Nicholas
Parsons often makes a comment about it).

Just to chip in here:
Most radio shows in America charge for you to attend a taping.
"Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" at it's home port in Chicago is a $20 a seat
affair.
"Whad'ya Know" runs for $5 in it's home port in Madison, WI
"A Prairie Home Companion" or "*Garrison Keillor's Radio Show*" as BBC7
listeners may know it... charges depending on location
from $20 to $90...

It's a sign of today's economy that radio shows just aren't supported as
they used to be.

A lot of the time it is because they have to recoup rental costs for the
location, advertising, electricity, etc...
Nothing's done for free anymore.

There's normally a small charge for non-BBC venues. I certainly have
paid of JAM and Clue in the past.
