thanks Linda and Chris, interesting.
I've only been to two JAM recordings but really, there isn't a lot of
gold left on the cutting room floor. I can only think of one incident.
Paul Merton went into this brilliant monologue which had reached
something like 50 seconds and it was very very funny, classic Merton
surrealism. He then clearly accidentally used the word "shit". He
immediately stopped and hung his head in shame, and the audience laughed
and applauded of course. Ross Noble pressed his buzzer and said "are you
allowed to say shit on the radio?" He finished off the minute.
There have been a few incidents of the word shit going to air on JAM and
as Paul had been so very funny I wondered if they might leave it in. But
they didn't. I wondered after if they might have let it go if Ross
hadn't repeated the word.
But that was it in three hours of live JAM. I wonder if they would have
enough material to make this sort of unedited edition worthwhile. Anyone
else got any stories of very funny moments at a live recording that
didn't make it to air?

Clue Live vol. 2 will be released by BBC Audiobooks on 17th July 2008. Synopsis from BBC Shop:
A second volume of two specially compiled, extended-length shows from Jon Naismith's production archive, featuring out-takes, ad libs and audience interaction from the Clue team. Taken from the early 1990s, these shows (edition dates t.b.c.) feature the classic Clue line up of Humphrey Lyttelton, Graeme Garden , Barry Cryer, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Jeremy Hardy and the much-missed Willie Rushton. May contain swearing
And there you have it. You could’ve sworn it was an elephant. Which brings me onto another Clue-related item – the Hamish & Dougal book will finally be released on 28th August 2008. Synopsis from publishers Random House:
Hello there! You’ll
have had your tea? Dougal here. Well, here we go, with our wee book. It’s
a collection or pot pourri (I’ve no idea what Hamish means by that
– it sounds like something to do with the Pope) of our activities or
‘doings’ in the village we call home, because that’s exactly
what it is.
Together with our housekeeper, Mrs Naughtie, and of course, the Laird who lives
up at the big hoose and shoots grouse and other bottles of whisky, these are
the actual scripts of our wee show which we performed on the wireless, when
most of you were probably in bed!
Hamish and I have known each other all our lives – well, not yet,
obviously! We have a very close relationship and also with each other. Mrs
Naughtie been with us since we first met her at the Krankie Arms, where she was
working as part-time barmaid and bouncer.
In addition to the scripts you’ll find all kinds of other things tucked
away under its kilt. There’s a hectic social life in the village.
You’ll visit the 'bide a wee' café, proud possessor of three
Michelin tyres. You’ll have a conducted tour of the big hoose by Big Tam,
our local guide (not during opening hours). You’ll marvel at the site of
the Battle of
Auchtermuchty, now allotments. You’ll peek into the Laird’s social
diary in ‘oot and aboot’ (40p at the post office). And a great deal
more.
Well, I hope this wee note will make you hurry to the till and spend the
terrible amount of money these wee books cost these days. But then again this
particular wee book is Scotland ’s
answer to Richard and Judy! Hurrah!
Away now…
Although Humph and Clue may be gone, we can still have these mementoes to take home in a little doggy bag J
I just bought the first Clue Live CD set with Jeremy Hardy’s first recording (Harrogate, November 1995), and one of Willie Rushton’s last (Liverpool, October 1996)… and I’ve got The New Uxbridge English Dictionary, which contains a lot of the New Definitions from the round of the same name, so I end this message with a little taster from the book (available for £7.99 from all good bookshops):
Hamas – what Geordies use to bang nails in
Endorse – loser in the Grand National
AWOL – dyslexic owl
Sanctity – multiple-breasted Frenchwoman
Arsenic – to steal buttocks

I see that Clue has released another one. Miriam
To me the best bit from the 1st "live" Clue was that on the buzzer
system they still had the panelist's names from JAM on them! Miriam
Yeah, the buzzers were shipped from a recording of Just a Minute in Nottingham to Harrogate . Loved Willie’s (brief) impression of Clement.

I don't at all mind paying £5 for an evening's entertainment. Nothing
else in the city will be as good value for money!
It makes sense that if they do have to hire venues they may need to
impose a charge in order to offset the extra costs
Just one thought though: Is there a particular reason they don't use
the Manchester BBC studios on Oxford Rd? Perhaps they're not suitable
(I don't know, I've never been), but maybe this will change with the
new MediaCity in Salford. If they come back again that is!
