Topic: Paul's new job

This from the Sun

IT’LL Be Alright On The Night is returning to our screens – with Paul
Merton stepping into Denis Norden’s shoes as host.

ITV bosses called time on the legendary bloopers show two years ago
after almost three decades on air.

They pulled the plug when Denis – who wrote his cringeworthy gags
himself – decided to retire at the grand old age of 84.

But now an insider says: “While it often only aired once a year, Alright
On The Night was one of ITV’s highest rating shows.

“We want to bring it back and Paul has agreed to do it.”

The programme, the first to show backstage blunders, ran from 1977 until
2006 and inspired a spin-off, Denis Norden’s Laughter File.

Have I Got News For You panellist Paul, 50, may well be hoping his new
role will help wipe out memories of his last ITV show – the total turkey
Thank God You're Here.

You're not wrong there. Dear, oh dear. I saw one "sketch" and turned
off.

I thought Thank God You're Here was good in parts, Paul was always
good, as were the likes of Marcus Brigstocke and Clive Anderson. I
think it suffered from poor scheduling from ITV and at times a choice
of guests who weren't used to improvising.

Hopefully if persevered with the right guests can be found and the
show can get better. WLIIA in my opinion was weaker in the earlier
years but got substantially better with the introduction of Ryan
Stiles, Colin Mochrie and Greg Proops. We will have to see what ITV
does with it I suppose.

Hello, Have you seen Ross Noble on the Australian version of this tv
show. He's brilliant in it (as you would expect)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoae1T-uyuk

That's a clip of it.

This group is fantastic thank you very much for the show episodes i've
been listening to them over the last few days.

I liked the show, but it was no Whose Line?. The premise of the show
was interesting, but I don't think it worked for Paul. He does shows
with other improvisers who don't follow a set of lines, whereas in
TGYH the other actors followed a script, and I don't think Merton
worked well with that. This might have just been in the USA version
that I briefly (for some unknown reason) watched. I remember they
asked the person who came in for their name, and they completely took
it around and went, "No, actually you're name is..." I just don't
consider that improvising.

As for It'll Be Alright on the Night, there isn't really much I can
say about it. It's just presenting, isn't it, basically? So I'll be
watching it but not expecting something spectacular.

Well he'll no doubt write his own script - and with all due respect to
bloopers type shows, his script could well be the funniest bit of the
show...
