is due for release on 10 July. As I've mentioned previously the introes
to each of the classic eppies are being shared this time between
Nicholas and Paul Merton. I can't wait to hear Paul's views on the four
originals - he is a very interesting analyst of comedy as well as being
a great practitioner. Hearing his assessment of the comedy of Kenneth
Williams will be worth the price of the CD alone for me.

The four classic eppies are

* a 1970s show with the gang of four - Sir Clement Freud, Kenneth
Williams, Peter Jones and Derek Nimmo

* a 1982 show featuring Clement, Kenneth, Barry Cryer and Libby Purves

* a 1983 show featuring Clement, Kenneth, Peter and Miles Kington

* a 1998 show featuring Clement, Peter, Paul Merton and Maureen Lipman

Again an interesting selection, especially if you're a fan of Clement or
Kenneth or Peter ... I can't wait!

Finally, an episode with the four original regulars! I'm amazed it
took until the fifth release.

Glad to see lots of Peter Jones as well, he's my favourite and I
sometimes feel he doesn't get the recognition he deserves on these
Classic compilations. Let's hope he makes it onto the front this time.

Overall a top-notch cast, I'm looking forward to hearing from pretty
much everyone on there.

Very much looking forward to this release, especially as I don't
believe I've heard any of the last three (maybe not even the first,
although of course it's hard to tell). I really haven't had time yet
to listen to as many pre-90s shows as I would have liked.

Paul Merton commentary is exciting too. I enjoy Nicholas' comments,
but I wouldn't expect there's much more for him to say, so Paul's
addition should bring some freshness.

I think the new Clue CD is also due for release the same day? I know
they both got pushed back.

He doesn't. There's a dark blue background which is quite eye-catching
and the photos are arranged a little differently from the previous
editions with Clement, Nicholas and Kenneth in the foreground, Derek and
Ian Messiter smaller in the background.... but no Peter!

Yeah, I just saw it on Play. It's a lovely cover (very eye-catching),
but considering there's more of Peter Jones than Derek Nimmo on this
release I find it surprising that they should include Derek but not Peter.

But then I also think it's bewildering that they chose to exclude him
in the first place, particularly if Ian Messiter is included (an
integral part of the show, of course, but if it was a choice between
the two of them I would have expected Peter to make the final cut).

I always feel Peter seems rather under-valued compared to the other
three - I certainly can't imagine Kenneth Williams ever being excluded
from the front cover.

I do think it's a shame and agree with everything you say. Do you think
part of the reason is Peter has a very anonymous face? I always struggle
to recognise him when I see him in a movie or TV show - it just seems so
ordinary!

Possibly - I remember watching one of the Pink Panther films (I think
he's in "Return"), and during his scene I hadn't even realised he was
in it until I heard his voice. (Although if it comes to that, I don't
suppose a lot of people would recognise Ian either.)
