I really enjoyed today/yesterday's show - I thought it was the best of
the current season. So many great moments. Paul saying the national
anthem of Vulgaria was "piss off, piss off..." Chris saying Vulgaria's
economy was kept alive by selling houses to comedians. The bit at the
end with the gestures on body language. It was delicious.
And I think Chris Addison is a JAM regular of the future. It has to be
said I am abysmally poor at this sort of prediction. The last person I
predicted would be a regular on the basis of their debut was Lee Mack in
2004 - and he's yet to have even a second show. I said Tim Rice was
bound to appear lots more often after he was very funny in 2002 - he was
then missing in action for three years!
So I am the angel of death but I thought Chris was just right for Just A
Minute. The main thing is interacting with the others - that's when the
real magic occurs. You get the subjects an hour or so before, any
half-decent comedian can look at a list of 10 subjects and think of the
odd amusing remark to make on them. But the test is if you can pick up
something someone else said and run with it.
Chris challenged the others vociferously, took jokes and made them into
running gags. He was competitive, witty, surrealistic, he improvised and
he kept on getting involved. I thought the sign was when Clement told
him "you're not that new any more". Clement picked up the fact that
Chris is a damn good player of this game.
And... it was great to have Graham Norton back. I thought it was his
best show for a while. Sometimes once he's been away for a while, he
almost seems out of practice, and he seems to contribute only when given
the subject, but that wasn't the case today.
Paul was excellent. He always is.
That was a top-class show.
