in The New Statesman this week



As I arrived at the Rose Theatre in Kingston upon Thames to record an
episode of Radio 4’s Just a Minute, I met Paul Merton. Paul always has
the best opening lines. I offered him a mint before we went through the
stage door. “Do you find it takes away the taste of your boyfriend?” he
asked.

As we waited for the recording to begin, Nicholas Parsons was pacing up
and down. "Do you still get nervous?" I asked him. "Oh yes," he
confirmed. "I still worry that maybe this time it won't work. Silly,
really. This is our 700th recording."

I've been to the "Rose Theatre", in Kingston-on-Thames, for other
productions (not for BBC recordings).

It's a VERY intimate (i.e. small) venue. It's really nothing more than a
tiny room above the Rose and Crown pub, with only seating for about 40
people. Much smaller even than the Jermyn Street Theatre in Central London,
which squashes in an audience of about 70.

If you go to a recording at the Rose Theatre, there are only 3 rows of
seats. And no stage; so the performers are within touching distance of the
front row. You'll be virtually sitting on Paul Merton's knee - or holding
the microphone for him!

Hmmm ....thanks for that Fantasty moment LOL I have a Thing for Paul
Merton and the idea of sitting on his knee well.......ahem... maybe I
had better stop there- some Fantasies are better not shared on a
Public forum :)
Actually the stage at the London Comedy Store is just a short raised
platform and I was in the center front row watching Paul and Company
perform a few yrs back-they often Were withing touching distance- but
I was good. Miriam
