It was very noticeable that Nicholas didn't contribute to any of the radio or TV news items, or the R4 "Last Word" obituary programme today. Usually he can always be counted on at such times.

Given that Clement gave him one of his earliest show business jobs, and they worked together on & off around 60 years, and with Clement's death following that of Humphrey Lyttleton's last year, it must leave him feeling very isolated & vulnerable, at his age.

Emma said on Last Word that Clement died mid-sentence writing an article for the Racing Post, the horse-racing newspaper.

The piece in The Guardian that Nicholas penned is oddly impersonal. It
may be that he was just too upset of course, but the bulk of it reads
more like a journalistic piece than a persoinal appreciation.

I thought the same - very strange. Also - has anybody seen a tribute by Paul Merton - didn't they sit next to each other in recordings more often than not (does this imply that they were good friends) .... I may have missed it - or maybe Paul is recording somewhere - but I noticed his absence.

Me too.

I think though that while, as Phil correctly says, Nicholas does usually
comment on celeb deaths and the like - except for formal interviews
which are rare and usually intended to promote his latest project, Paul
doesn't usually pop up in the media commenting on things.

Still, I think he could have made an exception.

I believe Nicholas commented on the death of CF from a cruise ship - perhaps he can't be interviewed electronically without the necessary equipment on board?

Gyles Brandreth said on Twitter that Nicholas was in the West Indies, so he was taking the bulk of calls regarding Clement's death. Oddly, I haven't seen Gyles' comments in print media, but he did have a series of posts on Twitter.

The only person that Nicholas seemed to genuinely comment on with regards to someone on JAM passing was Derek Nimmo, with that sort of eulogy he recorded that was put before the recording of Derek's final appearance.  He never did that for Kenneth or Peter, though I wonder if he'll do that for Clement.

Just in case anyone in the London area is interested Nicholas is at The New Wimbledon Theatre on Tuesday 26th May with his one man show.

Tickets through Lastminute.com are just £10 plus booking fee or directly from the box office for usual prices.

There seems to be plenty of space left. I'm not linked to the show/theatre in any way. Easy access by train to/from LOndon Waterloo, less than 10 min walk from the station. Tube and tram are nearby also.
