Dean,
I want to thank you for putting the transcripts online. There isn't a day which goes by that I don't listen to Just a minute. Tonight I found myself trying to remember quotes from the show. It was easy by typing the speakers name and what little dialog I remembered. Tonight I was trying to remember:
I burn the candle at both ends, it will not last the night, but oh my friends, and oh my foes, it gives a lovely light.
But without Jam, I may have never heard of Stanley Holloway's Albert and the Lion, or known countless other facts, people or poems alluded to over the years. I'm always curious when I don't know something someone (usually Clement) quotes, or refers to, and I look it up online.
So what I'm wondering from the rest of the group, what have you learned from Jam?
(don't everyone quote PM's educational show joke at once pls)

In fact, i listen to some episodes of Jam every day and it became a part of my daily life. Over the time ive learned to understand nearly all and beside the fun it brings, there is a special thing i always remember, thats how to pronounce "Halley" ;-)

sorry for the belated reply William - has been a very busy week at work
and that combined with sleeping very badly has made me a bit lax at
responding to the email traffic.
First thanks for the very kind words. I know I must sometimes seem like
a grumpy old bugger, but I really enjoy sharing my love of this show and
I am very proud of the success of things like this group (we passed 500
members last week!)
On what I have learned from JAM - lots. I know my spelling isn't always
very accurate but I will often look up someone on the web to check I'm
spelling their name correctly. Last week I was transcribing the
"missing" 195 eppy, "starters" and there was a subject, Marcus Aurelius
Antoninus. I looked him up and found some material on him and I have to
say - Kenneth Williams's summary was very accurate. I hadn't heard of
him before, and I learned something.
I suppose it's too much to expect Paul or Tony Hawks or Sue Perkins to
bone up on obscure subjects as Kenneth used to do. But personally I
rather liked the "educational" aspect of the show where Kenneth used to
talk on these historical or literary subjects. These days they're likely
just to turn a subject like this into a joke, or declare Marcus to be
the shopkeeper down the road or something.
I suppose the difference is that even if he had to read up on subjects,
Kenneth still was something of an intellectual or liked to be thought of
one anyway. Maybe if Stephen Fry becomes a regular, this aspect could be
brought back...

-What I have learned from JAM---- hmmmmm
1. that certain Plants can "outwit' you
2.that in k.Wms day the recordings of JAM were a Longggg way from Great Portland street :)
3. never put emolison paint in a Punette
4. People in china and India learn English from the show ( how confused they must get!)
5. Nicholas gets Tons of letters from all over the world but really they are written by Paul Merton
6. Never say Capt Vancouver was gay!
7. there is a 50% chance that Glyes B will do his hamlet/omeltte joke- given half a chance
8. Paul Merton can make a very fast Ham sandwich
9. Clement does Not know how to make a cornish pasty !
10. Clement can list about anything!
Well that is just a small part of what I have learned from JAM but the main things are- I always LOL at the show and that listening to a show ( epecially at work or on the bus) can make a Day Saner! Miriam

I too loved the educational aspects of the subjects from days gone by, but I think one of the primary things I learned from the show is 'it is a mark of insincerity of purpose, to seek a highborne emperor in a lowdown tea shop'

I've learned that Derek Nimmo seems to love traveling to Singapore a lot, and loves to stay in the Raffles Hotel. I've learend from Peter Jones that you can be on the show for x amount of years and still not really be any good at playing Just a Minute. I've learned that Nicholas Parsons followed the likes of David Hasselhoff, Naomi Campbell, John Tesh and others by having a record be successful in some obscure parts of the world, but not in the actual country he recorded the damn thing in. I've learned that the only reason Nicholas Parsons was in the Rocky Horror show was to sell choc ices and wore fishnet stockings going to the theater. I've learned that Nicholas Parsons can't fashion a foreign accent to save his life, largely because his attempts to sound from one country actually make him sound like he's from somewhere else
entirely. I've learned that mime works on radio. I've learned that you can earn bonus points literally for doing nothing except shaking your head in contempt at the chairman, largely if the subject happens to be 'The Chairman's Best Points' or something like that.

That herbaceous borders thing had me laughing for weeks!
I've also learned that circular breathing is very useful when delivering minute-long speeches on obscure topics.
I've learned that Nicholas gets up to all sorts in the darkest hours of the night!

The herbaceous borders thing is perhaps my favorite bit to ever emerge from Just a Minute, or really from anything related to British comedy.

But, Miriam, you did a bit of a list. We don't like lists. ;)

LOL- are you Channeling Wendy Richard? She objected several times to clement's listings- once she did if Before clement even did it!
( clement/paul/wendy/tony slattery-sorry don't know the show # so I defer to Dean or someone else on that info.
it's on the Canned Laughter cassette 1993-it's one of my top 5 JAM Episodes) Miriam

I thought I was,at first, but then I heard the episode I was thinking of again. It was actually Clement who said it. Thanks again Dean, I found what I was looking for quickly.
Here is what I had in mind:
MM: Ducking and diving is not allowed in the shallow end of the swimming pool. Neither is heavy petting, bombing, smoking cigarettes, taking drugs, using heavy machinery, eating beans on toast, going to the loo, hopping on one leg, doing the long jump...
BUZZ
NP: Clement you challenged.
CF: I thought there was an element of deviation in being in the shallow end of the swimming pool and going to the loo. You have to get out of...
NP: You always go in the deep end, do you?
PM: I go from the diving board! And also, it was a bit of a list, wasn't it!
NP: It was a great list. And she was getting...
CF: We don't like lists!
NP: She was getting back at Clement over his lists!
PM: We don't like lists, we've never liked lists on Tunbridge Wells.

It was easy by typing the speakers name and what little dialog I remembered. Tonight I was trying to remember:
