Just buying into the discussion about creating completer and better quality versions of recordings by combining a shorter (usually TS [Transcription Services] recording) with a full but lower quality version of the same program.
In principle it's a sound idea but there are several issues to consider
1. Clearly label the recording as an edited version. This will make life much easier for comedy archaeologists to deal with your work when you are long gone. It's bad enough having multiple sources and multiple versions of a programme to compare without adding extra ones masquerading as an original.
2. Ensure the two sources are pitch compatible. This is less of an issue for mainly speech programs like Just A Minute as a few percent speed difference is hard to notice, however, I have had to speed-correct recordings that were up to 10% fast or slow and had Nicholas sounding either like a chipmunk or alternatively like Clement on Valium.
3. The TS recording is not necessarily just a cut down version of the full program. Because the TS edit was done independently from the original tapes, there are times when the TS version contains material that is not in the original show.
4. Biker Don has already mentioned volume level compatibility and tools to edit without decoding and re-encoding MP3 files. This is an important issue since every decode/encode cycle reduces quality in a way that cannot be restored.
Best regards,
Martin
