I've just uploaded today's episode from the new series.
The direct link is <http://www.mediafire.com/?3o13j3qz3m2>

The guests: Tony Hawk, Sue Perkins, Tim Rice, Pam Ayers.
The first topic: Twittering. :)

This was ripped and converted to mp3 with the process that
was hammered out last week in the (possibly overly-technical)
"what sound quality do you want?" thread, so I'm curious to
hear from other list members on how this sounds...

cheers,
Charles

And here, as (semi-)promised is the m4p version of it, iTunes compatible and technically the best quality we're going to get. Again, comments on usefulness, compatibility, sound quality etc are much appreciated.

Thanks,

Thanks, Charles. And also to Robert for his version, although I shall stick to the MP3 version for the sake of brevity.

As I think I mentioned earlier, I'm cloth-eared so although this MP3 sounds great, so do most of the other recent ones as well.

Cheers

kJ

Hi Robert,

I'm not sure this is correct -- the file you've got listed there
is twice the size of the original aac, so it definitely appears to
be a re-encode.

After much hair-pulling and reading of the ffmpeg options, I've
created this test mp4 file which is the BBC's original stream,
muxed to an mp4 and trimmed at the ends, but *with no re-encoding*.
So *if* this works it's the best quality we're going to get...
could someone try downloading this and see if it plays nicely
with iTunes and/or their iPod?

http://www.mediafire.com/?jnfoej2zfjw <-- the test mp4 file

cheers,
Charles

Intriguing. Oddly enough my file is actually smaller than the raw aac I get.

What is more, that one sounds a lot tinnier, definitely not "best quality". I think it may have gone through a re-encoding phase while it was doing one of those above, unintentionally. In any case, it wouldn't play with Quicktime or iTunes, only in VLC. So this is odd to me that you should get that. I wonder if you could upload *your* original version i.e. pre-muxing, and see if my QuickTime Pro workings will help that through to best quality.

Robert
