this is rather a different issue - all shows are edited, sometimes if
rarely even in this sloppy way. In a way it makes sense too - if you
record 80 minutes over two shows with the same panel, and the second 40
minutes is much better than the first, why not try to edit some of the
second show into the first?

One year my station RNZ played shows where the 20 shows of that year
were edited down to 10 by taking the best bits of the two recordings and
merging them into one. Even the best bits of #500 ( Clement Freud, Paul
Merton, Graham Norton and Fred Macaulay) were edited into #505
( Clement, Paul, Graham and Richard Morton) despite the slight change of
panel! I've always wondered whether the Beeb offered these different
versions or if someone at RNZ decided 10 JAMs a year were enough!

But Dave's question is about whether there are different final versions
of shows.

Answer - yes, there are, especially of shows in the 70s. I think shows
then were usually broadcast at the Beeb at around 29 minutes, but for
some markets were then cut back closer to 25 minutes, presumably to try
and sell them to commercial stations. I quite often get people writing
to tell me my transcriptions are "wrong" when they have a different
version of the same show.

The two that come to mind are #207 (Clement, Kenneth Williams, Peter
Jones and Andree Melly) and #239 (Kenneth, Peter, Derek Nimmo and Sheila
Hancock) where there are two versions of each show that are very
different, each with different rounds included. It's quite common to
find differences in recordings of shows in this period.

Which all shows the futility of trying to follow the points scored, as I
have tried to do since I was a kid!
