#431 29-8 "Stocking" [NB. Singular] 20Feb93 DN, PJ, CF, PM
#433 29-10 "Reports" 27Feb93 PJ, PM, CF, C Ferguson
These are very big files once again, and can I repeat that I don't have
any control over this; this is how I picked them up on the internet
some time ago, and have no means to downsize them.

Thank you muchly for uploading Episode 428! I feel I'm starting to
become a pest now, but now that I look at my archive of the 1993
series, I see that all the episodes are roughly 29 minutes in length
except for #429 ("Anyone in this show", with Tony Slattery) which is a
little over 27. I wonder if a round was edited out of the version I
have, or if that was the original length of the episode as broadcasted.
Would you be kind enough to let me know if the version of 429 you have
is the same length, and if it longer, would you be able to upload that
as well? No rush, by all means. I have all this new stuff to enjoy in
the meantime!
Cheers,
Emile

this is rather a different issue - all shows are edited, sometimes if
rarely even in this sloppy way. In a way it makes sense too - if you
record 80 minutes over two shows with the same panel, and the second 40
minutes is much better than the first, why not try to edit some of the
second show into the first?
One year my station RNZ played shows where the 20 shows of that year
were edited down to 10 by taking the best bits of the two recordings and
merging them into one. Even the best bits of #500 ( Clement Freud, Paul
Merton, Graham Norton and Fred Macaulay) were edited into #505
( Clement, Paul, Graham and Richard Morton) despite the slight change of
panel! I've always wondered whether the Beeb offered these different
versions or if someone at RNZ decided 10 JAMs a year were enough!
But Dave's question is about whether there are different final versions
of shows.
Answer - yes, there are, especially of shows in the 70s. I think shows
then were usually broadcast at the Beeb at around 29 minutes, but for
some markets were then cut back closer to 25 minutes, presumably to try
and sell them to commercial stations. I quite often get people writing
to tell me my transcriptions are "wrong" when they have a different
version of the same show.
The two that come to mind are #207 (Clement, Kenneth Williams, Peter
Jones and Andree Melly) and #239 (Kenneth, Peter, Derek Nimmo and Sheila
Hancock) where there are two versions of each show that are very
different, each with different rounds included. It's quite common to
find differences in recordings of shows in this period.
Which all shows the futility of trying to follow the points scored, as I
have tried to do since I was a kid!

I remember that part, too. Paul and Tony verbally throwing insults at
each other regarding their clothes/hair (Tony's shirts from Colour
Blind R Us, Paul's hair by B&Q, etc.). Then Nicholas made the comment
that he made a slip of the tongue in "William Bly of the Mountie". At
the time I originally heard this episode (one of the first, I may add)
I had never heard the second Tony episode, and for the longest time I
had no idea what Nicholas's comment meant.
The editing was sloppy from time to time, that's for sure. I was also
left scratching my head when I first heard Paul's actual "debut" as a
panellist -- which actually was the second program he appeared in,
broadcast-wise. Things like that irritated me a little.

It's sometimes mind-boggling to keep track of all these alternate
versions! I have both versions of #207. However, I also have an
alternate version of #209 (Aimi Macdonald, "Awards") that not only has
several of the rounds in a different order, it also contains one
additional round which is not listed in your episode guide (for the
record, it's "Polygamy").
I've also noticed after downloading newer copies of the Blythe Duff
and Maureen Lipman editions from 1998, that there were bits that seem
to have been edited out from the version I had originally (for
instance, Blythe Duff while speaking about answering machines, said
"If one wanted to converse with a mechanical object, I would pick up
the phone and speak to William Hague.")
My head is spinning just trying to keep track of it all.

At least once a month I get this "correction" to my list from someone -
the other is Derek's two "last" appearances. Would have made my life
easier if they'd done these things differently!

Indeed. In fact Nicholas refers to Derek's Sheffield appearances
as "his last professional engagement" and Derek's family agreed
to its broadcast as a tribute. Yes, he appears once or twice more
before the end of the series, but I too think of this as his
last appearance - despite Dean's terse response to my e-mail
pointing this out some years ago!
The first Sheffield recording is also prefaced by an announcement
about Derek recovering in hospital (25th Jan 99) and the tribute
broadcast is on the 1st of March 99.
Sheffield is my home town and it is to my lasting regret that
I did not attend this recording, but it was not until some years
later that I 're-discovered' Just A Minute that I had
enjoyed so much in my childhood.
Series 37 on the links page includes both episodes #497 and #503
with the special prefaces regarding Derek and are, fittingly,
one of the very best pair of episodes from one recording you could
wish to hear.

I have of the second recording he did with Linda Smith, Tony Hawks
and Graham Norton has that special opening that Nicholas did almost
eulogizing his old friend, I think of that as Derek's last
appearance.

the Beeb would never have sped bits up to get more into their broadcast
version.
Its just that some of these shows have been copied and recopied and sent

This falls into a different category which you of all us will be
familiar with - Nicholas making a mistake. He isn't to be relied on as a
historian of the game.
My favourite example of this is in #415 in 1992 where he more than once
refers to Maureen Lipman as never having played before, though she did
do the show in 1982 (the show was on Just A Classic Minute Volume 2). I
can easily forgive Nicholas for forgetting this - but I always wonder
why Maureen didn't say something. She is after all a devotee of JAM by
her own admission so you think she might have remembered.

thanks very much - it's nice to have some "fresh" Aimi
Macdonald, if only for one round. Isn't that giggle one of the
unforgettable sounds of the whole series.
Actually that gives me a thought - what if you had to sum up the
series Just A Minute in a minute, ie. a one minute tape of the
best of 40 years of JAM... I'd include in my minute
* Aimi's giggle
* Kenneth shouting "I'm a cult"
* Peter Cook's "a constant stream of wee-wees"
* Graham's pussy joke
* Derek berating Nicholas over something
* Clement's "Virgin records" joke
* Peter Jones: "you'd be better off with the hiccups"

Don't forget Elaine Stritch's comment that Kenneth "makes one word
into a three-act play." A classic line from one of the funniest JAMs
of all time.

I know what you mean, the warmth and even love that radiates from the
audience for Peter Jones as the years pass by has transmitted to me
over the years. Listening to JAM a s a kid this just never came
across to me. Perhaps as I get older I just appreciate how genuinely
very funny and witty he was, as well as a an incredibly nice person.

Kenneth wasn't around was because he died, the same with Derek Nimmo

caught up with the series as a whole.

What about:
Ross Noble: We've all shaved our pets, c'mon!
Nicholas : Pets of the human kind but ... er ....
There's also a great line in this episode where Tony hawks teases
Nicholas with introducing Elongation as a new rule there and then
which Nicholas takes seriously, the terrified waver in his voice as
he tries to respond in the negative is a classic moment in itself.
In fact what a fantastic episode altogether - #605 if anyone cares to
give it another listen

Actually this is one of my favourites too - I love this bit. To
understand it, you have to realise that Ross is sitting beside Graham
Norton... This makes me laugh hard every time I hear it.
NICHOLAS PARSONS: That was justified Ross, you have 53 seconds, my
advice to the person sitting next to me, starting now.
ROSS NOBLE: The advice Id give to the person sitting next to me is try
not to be so flamboyant! Stop wearing those crazy costumes, and running
over town making those camp suggestions!
BUZZ
RN: And Nicholas just wont listen!
