I didn't hear the programme so I don't know the context in which he said it, but at least in one context he does have a point. And it pains me to agree with Bill Oddie at all, but there you go.

Both the Goons and TIFH in format were very like a traditional music hall presentation; short-ish segments of comedy interspersed with musical segments.

Most would agree that the content and style of The Goons and TIFG (certainly in its later series) was novel but their format was certainly well-established.

It's also interesting to note that both those shows spanned the 1958 date.
