Topic: Oddie's Theory

Bill Oddie, during his time as comedy controller on BBC7 (basically an excuse to show radio shows) stated that all comedy before Beyond Our Ken in 1958 was just second rate music hall translated for the wireless-certainly true for ITMA, but he did seem to miss out on the Goons and Take It From Here. His programmes seemed to show an increase in quality in radio shows up to the present day, but what's your opinion?

I'm sure he couldn't intentionally have omitted the Goon show in his calculations.  The blood of the Goons is stained deeply into the weft and weave of the fabric of The Goodies, Python, Ross Noble, Paul Merton, Eddie Izzard, the Mighty Boosh and every decent comedian since Spike first Needle Nardle Noo'ed.

I didn't hear the programme so I don't know the context in which he said it, but at least in one context he does have a point. And it pains me to agree with Bill Oddie at all, but there you go.

Both the Goons and TIFH in format were very like a traditional music hall presentation; short-ish segments of comedy interspersed with musical segments.

Most would agree that the content and style of The Goons and TIFG (certainly in its later series) was novel but their format was certainly well-established.

It's also interesting to note that both those shows spanned the 1958 date.

Cheers

Oddie was just spouting the usual nonesense - a result of reading the script
that BBC 7 gave him without bothering to think about it.

Not only was Hancock's Half Hour on air from 1954, as has been pointed out,
which had no music-hall or musical items in it, but Beyond Our Ken and then
Round the Horne ran continuously from 1959 to 1968, both shows consisting of
nothing *but* music-hall sketches and musical items!
