I REALLY didn't like the TV version at all.

Some of the contestants looked so self-conscious and un-easy.
The stage looked so open and spacious, so much empty space not at all how I imagine the radio set.
And those horrid colours...

I didn't watch many episodes to give it a good chance but it made me cringe so much I couldn't bring myself to watch any more so that may be an unfair, biased viewpoint

Sorry, but as in the heady days of Juke Box Jury....
<hooter!>  It's a MISS.

I think that raises an interesting point which I've not seen discussed before: what does a Just A Minute recording look like?

I haven't been to any Just A Minute recordings but I have been to five I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue recordings as they tour more than Just A Minute does and I'm not close to London to catch the Radio Theatre recordings. So I'll try to describe a "Clue" recording and if anyone has been to a Just A Minute recording can point out the differences.

A recording takes place on a "set" of sorts. It's three fairly standard school or church hall tables, probably 2m x 1m set with one table in the middle and one either side on a slight angle to form an open "U" shape. The chair sits in the middle with the scorer (the lovely Samantha in "Clue") next to him and the teams sit two to a table on either side. Each table is draped with a pale blue cloth with "BBC Radio 4" in white lettering.

On "Clue" the producer (Jon Naismith) does a short warm-up and some sound tests with the audience and then introduces the cast who come out one at a time to applause.

And that's pretty much it, come to think of it.

And come to think of it again, that's fairly close to how it appeared on the "Arena" programme for Just A Minute as well.

There are "bootleg" copies of some Clue recordings knocking about as well as a released "extended edition" CD which both give a better flavour of a recording than the edited broadcast shows. Does anyone know of any similar for Just A Minute?

<shock!>
You omitted Sven !!
He very occasionally substitutes for Samantha.

Not forgetting Monica in the late 80s too...

She gave a hand keeping the teams points up when Samantha was unavailable.

The setting you describe for Clue is pretty much identical for JAM. It
is as simple and drab and cheap-looking as it can possibly be. Three
tables, the end ones at very slight angles to the centre ones. Two seats
at each table. From left it's Paul and Clement, scorer and Nicholas,
woman guest and Tony/Graham/whoever. Five mikes. And the producer comes
on first to a mike in front of the tables, later removed. She introes
Nicholas comes on and chats to the audience for maybe 60 seconds -
mainly encouraging them to laugh! He then brings on the panel and the
scorer comes on with them.

I described the setting in some detail for the Straftford show i saw a
couple of years ago here
